A Harlem High School senior was airlifted to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital Tuesday after his SUV flipped and struck a tree in Appling.

Jonathan Hartman, 18, of Appling, is in critical condition, according to hospital spokesperson Christen Carter.

The single-vehicle wreck occurred at about 3 p.m. on Scotts Ferry Road near Sellars Road.

The cause of the wreck is still under investigation, but Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said Hartman’s vehicle, a Toyota 4Runner, ran off the road. Hartman over-corrected the vehicle, causing it to flip several times and slam into a tree.

Hartman is the son of Kiokee Baptist Church Pastor Steve Hartman, Morris said.

AirMed landed in the roadway to transport Hartman, who was described by a witness as unconscious but breathing.

Photographs of Hartman wreck.

Per my Facebook post:

The Columbia County News-Times has reached an all-time low in publishing the photographs of Johnathan Hartman's car and his critically injured body as he was loaded into a helicopter. This Harlem High School senior has a family and friends that are devastated at this moment and now they are assaulted with these images. I find it very hard to believe that anyone who might read this "rag" really "needed" to see these photographs. No purpose was served....the news could have been reported without these tasteless and cruel pictures. Please help me to bombard the Columbia County News-Times with your thoughts on this subject. Perhaps no other family will be forced to endure this invasion of privacy in such a trying time.

Ok as a firefighter its

Ok as a firefighter its called freedom of the press....You think all of us in public safety want our pictures on tv and in the news paper

Freedom of the Press

The "press" has a responsibility to report the news. Taking and publishing pictures of a tragedy is senseless and cruel.

Right is right but wrong is wrong

Need I say more.....I agree with momashwes it is totally wrong to post these pictures on the web. Freedom or no freedom sometimes you have to have morals. Hartman family we are lifting your family up in our prayers. Our boys had only one class with your son and didn't really know him but they could tell by his actions that he knew Jesus Christ as his savior and lived for Him. God is good all the time and we know He will be there to comfort your family. We are also praying that your older son has a safe trip home. In Christ

Really? and a video to boot... Freedom of speech yes we have that right, freedom of the press? yes they have rights as well. Freedom to be stupid and heartless? Well there is no law against it but there sure should be! As for firefighter 1005-consider it a "hazard" of the job.

Does my heart break for this

Does my heart break for this family - yes; Do I wish that it had never happened - yes; Am I upset with the Chronicle / CCNT publishing this picture - no. The pictures were taken from a respectable distance and if you weren't at the wreck to identify people / cars / specifics, then this could have been any file photo of a previous accident that a helicopter responded to. These pictures bring a reality to all who see them, a harsh reminder that each day is a blessing. The reporter did his job, reporting the news, without being abusive, intrusive or destructive. I am sure it was difficult for him / her also. I am also sure that decisions were checked and double checked before the final decision was made to publish these photos and video. The do document that every effort was being made to save this young mans life.
