A Columbia County school bus crashed into a dumpster this morning in Grovetown.

School bus driver Ernest Turner, 58, was driving bus No. 991 at about 7:15 a.m. when the bus hit a dumpster on the 100 block of Misty Woods Drive, according to Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.

Turner was driving forward when he misjudged the distance and struck the dumpster that sat less than 2 feet off the road.

Of the 38 pupils on board, Morris said eight were taken by ambulance to an area hospital with minor injuries and five others were transported by their parents. All injuries were minor.

School system Transportation Director Dewayne Porter is out of town today. Assistant Director Shirley Doolittle refused to immediately comment on the crash.
