Two Lakeside High High School seniors tied on Thursday to become Columbia County’s STAR Students.
Katie Bollag and Mihir Patel scored a 2350 on the SAT to win the recognition.
The STAR Student award is given annually to the student scoring the highest on the SAT.
Those students then pick an influential educator in their lives as STAR Teachers. Bollag chose Lilly Good and Patel picked Jerry Meitin for those honors.
It was in Good’s class that Bollag said she opened the results of her SAT exam to learn her score.
“Ms. Good has been a really big part of my life,” Bollag said of the teacher who has become her go-to person when in need of advice.
Good said she sees their relationship differently, calling Bollag and “energetic” and “enthusiastic” student.
“I got a lot more from Katie than she ever got from me,” she said.
Patel likened Meitin to a superhero and said he enjoyed his “real-world” applications to his lessons.
“Despite the worst or best circumstances, he always helps others,” Patel said.
Meitin called Patel an “amazing” student whose genius seems unlimited.
“He just absorbs knowledge,” he said of Patel.
In a reception held at the Harlem Woman’s Club, each STAR Student and Teacher from the county’s public and private high schools were honored for their accomplishments.
Those students and teachers, respectively, included Garrett Sisson and Joseph Lutz from Augusta Christian Schools, Erin Brousseau and Tim Shafer for Augusta Preparatory Day School, Kevin Puha and Kathryn Nave for Evans Christian Academy, Helen Xiang and Lynn Pagano for Evans High, Brenton McCorvey and Anthony Cummings for Greenbrier High, Erin Chizmar and Tracy Roden for Grovetown High, and Danny Banks and Nicholas Hayes for Harlem High.
Bollag and Patel now will compete to become the STAR Student of Region 7 in a ceremony to be held next month in Thomson. A banquet in Atlanta will be held in April to announce the state winner.
