The Georgia Department of Transportation will hold an open house Tuesday to provide information on detours for a planned bridge replacement project in Appling.

The DOT plans to replace the “structurally deficient” Scotts Ferry Road bridge over Greenbrier Creek. The bridge is located on the road between its intersections with Yelton and Tubman roads.

The open house will be held 5-7 p.m. at North Columbia Elementary School, 2874 Ray Owens Road, Appling.

No formal presentation will be given at the session, according to a DOT announcement.

A starting date for construction hasn’t yet been announced, but the project is expected to keep the bridge closed for up to a year.

During that time, traffic will be detoured using Ray Owens Road and State Route 150.

According to the DOT, the existing bridge was built in 1955, and will be replaced with a 180-foot-long, 36-foot-wide concrete bridge crossing Greenbrier Creek. In addition, the intersection with Yelton Road will be shifted approximately 100 feet north to accommodate the longer bridge.
