The case against a Harlem teen accused of fatally shooting his 14-year-old neighbor might go before a jury next month.

At a calendar call hearing Wednesday morning, Superior Court Judge Michael Annis tentatively set Feb. 6 as the start date for the murder trial of 15-year-old Lacy Aaron Schmidt.

The trial is expected to last about four days, according to prosecuting and defense attorneys.

Schmidt, then 14, is accused of fatally shooting his neighbor and friend Alana Calahan inside her Miles Road home Jan. 31.

He initially claimed he saw an intruder on the property. Eventually, Schmidt told authorities he accidentally fired a gun belonging to Alana’s father as she sat at the computer in her family’s dining room.

Sheriff’s deputies found the gun in nearby woods. They also found the gun case, a box of ammunition and a camera belonging to the Calahans inside his house.

Schmidt was indicted in March on murder, theft and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He pled not guilty to those charges in May.

Schmidt is being held in the Regional Youth Detention Center without bond while awaiting trial.
