A Martinez-based organization aimed at assisting seniors in the community recently was awarded with help of its own.
Walmart announced Wednesday that When HELP Can’t Wait would receive $10,000 as part of its “12 Days of Giving” Facebook campaign.
“I’m elated because we’re being recognized as someone who is actually achieving something in the community for our seniors,” said When HELP Can’t Wait President Helen McVicker.
On the third day of Walmart’s Facebook campaign, the company donated $120,000 to 10 non-profit organizations throughout the United States that care for seniors.
Nominations, which included pictures and descriptions of each organization, were submitted through Facebook.
At When HELP Can’t Wait, about 30 to 35 volunteers help to enhance the lives of area nursing home residents through 14 programs, including toiletry donations and a Christmas gift project that is currently underway.
McVicker said part of the $10,000 donation will go toward purchasing items for the elderly residing in nursing homes in Richmond and Columbia counties. Toiletries, such as deodorant, cologne, toothbrushes and body wash, are accepted year round at the When HELP Can’t Wait office, 3822 Commercial Court, Suite D, which is across form the Martinez post office.
“We will spread it among all of our programs,” said McVicker of the monetary donation. “It will support our organization as a whole.”
McVicker said she hopes recognition from the award will spread the word about what When HELP Can’t Wait is doing to help elderly members in the community.
“I’m hoping that this will raise awareness among the community that these forgotten seniors are out there in numbers and need help,” she said.
