New regions set in GHSA

All area schools know their region and subregion destinations, except one.

On Tuesday, the Georgia High School Association Reclassification Committee placed schools in regions for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years. According to the GHSA Web site, the goals were to cut down on travel costs and time away from class.

Amongst the Augusta-area schools, only Hephzibah must wait a little longer to know everything.

The Rebels were put in Region 3-AAAA, but with their subregion still to be determined. Hephzibah football coach John Bowen joked people have waited this long, so another day or so won’t be a huge deal.

In that region, Burke County, Butler, Cross Creek, Glenn Hills and Richmond Academy are in Subregion B while Liberty County, South Effingham, Statesboro and Wayne County are in Subregion A.

Bowen said one Subregion B school might be moved to Subregion A to allow Hephzibah’s placement in B . That would result in a five-team subregion setup. Otherwise, Hephzibah would simply join Subregion B and have six teams in the subregion.

Regardless, the coach sees Hephzibah’s spot in the region as a positive.

“It’s good in that way for scheduling and trying to build some local rivalries,” Bowen said.

Schools have until Friday, Dec. 16 at noon to appeal region placement and attempt a lateral transfer. The reclassification committee will hear these appeals 10 a.m. Dec. 19 at the GHSA’s office building, according to the Web site.
