Even before the new playground at Evans Towne Center Park opened to the public last month, it already was swarming with children accompanied by parents willing to trespass to get them to the monkey bars.
Since the opening, the park only has grown in popularity, said Columbia County Community and Leisure Director Barry Smith.
Smith estimates that hundreds of people enjoy the playground’s amenities each day. The parking lots, he said, stay full on weekends.
“All day long, it seems like it’s being used by children,” he said. “It’s got a lot of different components for all ages.”
The park’s walking track is another feature used by many, Smith said.
While the park is open from dawn until dusk, Smith said they haven’t yet had to strictly enforce those hours.
“We’re just so elated that they’re using it and it’s well accepted,” he said.
If guests find the new playground too overcrowded, Smith encourages them to head across Ronald Reagan Drive to the one at the Memorial Gardens behind the Columbia County Library.

County Recreational Sites
We Columbia countians owe Mr. Cross, our other county commissioners and Mr. Smith credit for the new Evans TownCenter park, the dog park at Riverside and the improvements at the Savannah Rapids park. Very impressive all.
