Halloween is just days away, and two Columbia County animal-rescue agencies are offering special adoption events with a Halloween theme.
Columbia County Animal Services is celebrating with the It’s Scary to Be Homeless adoption event through Oct. 31.
“We have newborn kittens and newborn puppies,” Animal Services Manager Linda Glasscock said. “We have big dogs and small dogs. We have a variety of animals.”
On Oct. 31, the department will lead tours of young children through the new facility at 1940 William Few Parkway.
“We’ll be dressed in our Halloween garb and giving out candy,” Glasscock said. “It should be a good day.”
The adoption brings discounted adoption prices: $15 for dogs and puppies and $10 for cats and kittens.
The shelter is open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. On Oct. 31, the shelter will close to the public at 4 p.m.

CSRA Happy Tails is also providing special October adoption rates for certain animals – dogs with black coats.
“Black dogs are often the ones that are overlooked, and there are so many,” Happy Tails volunteer board member Susan Parrott said. “At most shelters, I think you’ll find they are the most often overlooked.”
The dogs will be available for adoption along with many other black dogs fostered by Happy Tails volunteers at weekend adoption events.
Cats, dogs, puppies and kittens of many varieties will be available for adoption 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Tractor Supply Co. on Bobby Jones Expressway; and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday at PetCo in the Mullins Crossing shopping center on Washington Road in Evans.
Black dogs will be available for a $100 discounted adoption rate. Normal adoption rates are $120 for dogs and $85 for cats. All Happy Tails animals are spayed or neutered and current on all vaccinations.
