EDITOR'S NOTE: The families have been notified by authorities. It is the policy of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources not to release the names until proper parties are notified.

Authorities with Georgia Department of Natural Resources identified the two men believed to be missing after two boats collided at a high rate of speed Friday near Wildwood boat ramp.

The missing men have been identified as George Ashmore, 51, of Thomson and Tom Allgood Jr., 65.

While authorities would not confirm Allgood to be a local Augusta attorney, sources close to the family confirmed Allgood's death.

According to DNR, crews have successfully recovered Ashmore's body, but are continuing the search for Allgood.

Allgood is the son of the late Tom Allgood Sr. a former state Senator, who perished in a plane crash at Daniel Field in 2000 with his wife, Thelma.

"The preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed that the two bass boats collided, ejecting both drivers. Neither driver resurfaced," the news release stated.

DNR confirmed the two men are the only victims involved in the crash at this time, and will continue to search for Allgood's remains.

"Search efforts (Friday) afternoon, using DNR boats equipped with sonar and the Columbia County dive team, failed to locate the victims. The search was suspended at dark and resumed early this morning. Columbia County Sheriff's Deputies secured the scene throughout the night."

GA DNR Law Enforcement's Critical Incident Reconstruction Team (CIRT) is investigating the incident and have recovered both boats from the collision.
