Harlem firefighters selling Boston butts for needy

Posted: January 17, 2016 - 12:00am

Harlem firefighters are looking to help those in need by providing some good eats.

The Harlem Fire Department is selling Boston butts through March 1 to raise funds to help families and other firefighting brothers in distress.

“It’s to raise money to relief efforts when people get burned out and whatever around the area,” fire Chief Tripp Lonergan said.

Members of the department went to South Carolina during the floods and provided water and toiletries and fed about 800 people, Lonergan said. They also help provide for immediate needs of families who have been burned out of their home or firefighters in need.

“That’s what we’re doing this for,” Lonergan said. “It’s a contingency fund so that we can get involved and help out. .. Immediate stuff that you can use. We’re looking to keep continuing to do that.”

Lonergan said the department, famous for their cooked chickens at the Oliver Hardy Festival and other events, will be cooking the butts. They’ll be available for pick up at the Harlem Department of Public Safety building on West Milledgeville Road from noon to 2 p.m. on March 5. They will be fully cooked and served wrapped in foil and in foil pans.

Tickets can be purchased at the public safety building on weekdays, from any Harlem firefighter or by calling (706) 556-6262.
