John Wayne Konczal, 77, of Evans, was pronounced dead at the scene after pulling into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer on Hardy McManus Road.

An Evans man died after a wreck with a tractor trailer Monday morning.

John Wayne Konczal, 77, of Mitchell Lane, died as a result of the wreck on Hardy McManus Road at Halali Farm Road, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Andy Shedd.

Konczal was stopped at the stop sign on Halali Farm Road about 11:30 a.m., officials say. When he attempted to turn his Mercedes ML350 SUV left, he pulled directly into the path of an oncoming northbound tractor trailer owned by Hudson Farms in Thomson, Shedd said. The truck hit the driver’s door of Konczal’s SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene by county Deputy Coroner Bonnie King.

The truck driver – Buford McGahee Jr., 66, of Stapleton, Ga. – was not injured. He will not be charged, officials say.
