Augusta Prep senior Nolan Brandon arrived at the Columbia County STAR Student reception late and on crutches after being injured in a basketball game an hour earlier.
His arrival was perfectly timed, just as the other STAR Students were finishing their presentations.
Moments after Brandon represented Augusta Prep at the podium and introduced Tim Shafer as his choice for STAR Teacher, Columbia County Superintendent Dr. Sandra Carraway named him as the Columbia County STAR Student.
Brandon, who scored 2360 on the SAT, was chosen from among seven public and private high schools during the 53rd Annual STAR Student reception at the Harlem Women's Club.
"These students are amazing," said Dr. Carraway. "The fact that Tim Shafer, who has been a STAR Teacher 10 times before, has such high praise for Nolan says a lot."
Brandon, who led his football team to a state championship this year, has also been a member of the math team for four years and won a National Honor Society Fellowship.
"The same day that the school announced that he was the STAR Student," said Shafer, "it was announced that he was named the Independent School Football Player of the Year for the CSRA."
Brandon, whose older brother Hutton Brandon was also STAR Student at Augusta Prep three years ago, has already been accepted at the U.S. Naval Academy where he is considering majoring in Aeronautical Engineering.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. The student who scores highest on the SAT and is also in the top 10 percent of his class is named the school's STAR Student.
Brandon will go on to compete in the Region STAR competition and, if successful, the State STAR.
Other school STAR Students and STAR Teachers honored were:
Kyle Cartledge, Augusta Christian Schools, and STAR Teacher Sarah White.
Amy Youngsman, Evans High School, and STAR Teacher Lynn Pagano.
Jesse Williamson, Greenbrier High School, and STAR Teacher Dr. William Fowler.
Katie Trimm, Grovetown High School, and STAR Teacher Brian Toney.
Gabby Farr, Harlem High School, and STAR Teacher Alda Wilmoth.
Edward She, Lakeside High School, and STAR Teacher John Cato.
