The day-to-day leadership of Columbia County’s commendable school system is now in the hands of Sandra Carraway, who takes over this month as school superintendent.
The county’s school system is widely recognized as the main attraction for new residents. For that reason, the choice of professionals and elected officials to guide that system is exceptionally important.
Her elevation from deputy to superintendent mirrors the tried-and-true method of private enterprise: Brought up through the system, with continued success inviting greater challenges, Carraway has for the past five years been groomed for the top post. She’s knowledgeable; she’s prepared; and she’s already planning for the continued advancement of students.
Her immediate challenges include making sure that two new schools – Evans Elementary and Columbia Middle – are ready to open next month.
It won’t be easy. But Carraway, not only a product of the school system but a longtime teacher, principal and administrator within it, is up to the task.
