It was a special day at the Springlakes pool Saturday.
Springlakes held its annual relay meet after first renaming it the Pete Igel Annual Relay Meet in honor of the man who started it 25 years ago.
Igel died last summer, but the Igel family was in attendance as Springlakes swim team coordinator Marianne Petras presented his widow, Monika, with a plaque commemorating the 25th anniversary of the meet and the dedication of the meet to Igel.
Igel’s children Sonja, Eric and Petra traveled from out of town to attend.
“It’s very special because this was a big part of his life,” said Petra Igel, adding that her father immersed himself in whatever sport his children were involved in. “All of his kids grew up swimming, so these are fond memories. He just took pride in doing swim team and just really took joy in doing it. It’s a very emotional, sweet day.”
CSRA Swim League president Keith Hendry knew Igel for a number of years.
“Pete was great,” said Hendry. “My child swam in it, ’95 probably, when Pete was running the meet. Great guy and it’s an emotional time for Mrs. Igel, no doubt.”
Petras said Igel, one of the founders of the Springlakes swim team, wanted children to have fun.
“When he was a starter, he would always say before every meet, ‘Let’s all have fun and cheer for each other and be good sports,’” Petras said.
