With the spring seasons over for Columbia County following the Georgia High School Association’s Class AAAAA baseball championship series’ conclusion, let’s get caught up with postseason awards in some of our other leagues.
SCISA All-State Team listed
The South Carolina Independent School Association released its all-state teams recently, with Augusta Christian well-represented.
Softball player Laura Kate Toburen was named to the all-state team, as were SCISA state track champions Bryson Ashmore, Grant Newman and Anna Motes. Motes also was named to the girls basketball all-state team. Surprisingly, nobody from the Lions boys basketball team was named to the team, even though the team made a run to the Class AAA state semifinals.
GISA All-Region/All-State Teams
The Augusta Prep girls soccer team finished 13-3 while advancing to the semifinals of the Georgia Independent School Association Class AAA state tournament. Four players – McKenna DeGraaf, Amanda Murphy, Joanna Murphy and Caroline Smith – were named to the 2013 GISA Region 4-AAA all-region team, with Smith and the Murphys named to the GISA AAA all-state team.
The Cavaliers (8-8) also advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 state soccer tournament before being eliminated. Four players – Christian Guthrie, Franklin Sims, Max Aquinde and Kevin Huggins – were named to the 2013 GISA Region 4-AAA all-region team, with Aquinde and Huggins named to the GISA AAA all-state team.
In tennis, Lady Cavalier Brooke Stevens was the 2013 Class AAA individual state champion.
While things slow down a little until late July, there really is no such thing as an offseason anymore.
Camps for various sports are beginning in full force this week; travel and Amateur Athletic Union teams have already started; and summer baseball isn’t far behind. Throw in a little high school football passing league to accompany the CSRA summer swim league, and there is more than enough to keep our coaches and athletes well-occupied until that first school bell rings in August.
