An Evans woman called deputies Monday evening after catching two children trying to start a fire at the neighborhood gazebo.

The Summerton Circle resident said she saw two children, ages 12 and 13, trying to start a fire with a gas can just after 5:30 p.m. near the gazebo in the common area of the Jessica Creek at Knob Hill subdivision, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report. When she came outside, the woman said the children ran back to their home, leaving the gas can and lighter behind.

A deputy found burned mulch and the gas can.

The children’s grandmother allowed the deputy to speak with them. They admitted they tried to start a fire because they were bored, according to the report.

The president of the neighborhood homeowners association opted not to press charges.

no intent to commit a crime

Attempted arson or just bored with summer? If someone burns down your house do you have to press charges for an arson arrest? If you are murdered, do they need you to press charges? Criminal activity in CC takes on some odd faces.

Let's play "Pretend."

Let's pretend that two young folk didn't attempt to burn common property.

Would the KHHOA prez have been so agreeable to playing "Pretend" had these "bored" children opted to burn his/her personal property?
