A Martinez man was arrested early Thursday for beating his girlfriend and threatening authorities with a knife.
A woman in the house at the 3900 block of Fox Hill Court in Martinez said she was awakened at about 3:45 a.m. by her son, who told her William Corbett Smith Jr., 29, was beating his girlfriend, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office incident report.
Her son said he had already called 911 and told her to wait outside. On her way out of the residence, she could hear screaming and banging at the back of the house.
When deputies arrived, they heard Smith yelling in the back bathroom.
They found he had locked the door with his girlfriend inside.
When they forced their way into the bathroom, Police saw Smith’s girlfriend in the shower bleeding from facial injuries.
Deputies tried to arrest Smith but he resisted and pulled a knife. He began lunging at deputies with the knife, telling them to “kill me now.”
An officer pulled out his weapon and told Smith to drop the knife, but he refused.
A deputy was able to knock the knife out of Smith’s hand with a baton and he was pinned against the wall.
Smith then grabbed the baton, but the deputy got it back.
While Smith was handcuffed, he continued to fight.
Smith’s girlfriend, who had deep cuts and large knots on her face, said he threatened to slit her throat with the knife. He hit her his fists and struck her on the back of the head with the knife handle.
The woman was taken to Doctors Hospital for treatment.
Smith, charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, is being jailed without bond.
