Columbia County teams fare well at state cross country meet

Greenbrier senior Chris Wilder registered a third-place finish, while Lakeside’s boys squad finished third on Saturday afternoon in the Class AAAA division at the Georgia High School Association State Cross Country Championships in Carrollton.

Brad Hort, of McIntosh High School, won the boys race in 16:05.66. Wilder finished close behind runner-up Michael Thurston (16:11.85), of Marist.

Lakeside senior Sid Vaughn was second behind Wilder in fourth.

Chase Fowers notched a 20th-place finish to bolster the Lakeside effort. Nicholas MacDonald was 22nd and Christian Bowles 25th for the Panthers.

Joining Wilder as top finishers for Greenbrier was Logan Hughes, who was 24th. The Wolfpack finished eighth among 32 teams.

Flowery Branch won with 77 points, followed by Marist with 101 and Lakeside with 102.

In the girls race, Lakeside junior Sarah Bowles was fifth overall in 19:23, helping her team to a fourth-place finish.

Champion Marist was well ahead of the pack with 78 points, followed by Flowery Branch (162), Dunwoody (168) and Lakeside (178).

Lakeside got finishes of 35th from Jasmine Payne, 44th from Lara Way, 57th from Jenny Lind, and 64th from Erin Payne.

Evans was 18th in the 30-team field, aided by Jasmine Stone’s 47th-place finish. Jackie Ramos was 58th.

Greenbrier finished 22nd as a team, led by Laura Shillingsburg’s 79th-place effort.
