Authorities looking for cigarette thief   03/15/13 - 11:35am

Columbia County authorities are looking for a man they say stole cigarettes from a Martinez Walgreen’s store on March 5.

The manager of the store at 3900 Washignton Road told deputies that at about 2 a.m., a man tried to buy a carton of Newport cigarettes, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report. The credit card the man used was denied.

The man grabbed the carton of cigarettes, worth $48, and left in an older green vehicle on Bobby Jones Expressway toward Richmond County, according to the report.

Two Lakeside students suspended over "disturbing" online comments   03/14/13 - 6:17pm

 

“Disturbing” social media posts brought authorities to Lakeside High School Thursday, when two students were suspended, but not charged.

Students alerted school officials after seeing comments posted on Twitter by two 17-year-old students, Columbia County Chief of School Safety Lance Poss said.

“It was some comments that they were making, stuff they like to do and see,” Poss said, adding the comments were “graphic.” “There were absolutely no direct threats made to the school or to any individual student or to anyone.”

A Riverdale, Ga., man wanted for convenience store robberies in Columbia and Richmond counties was arrested early Thursday.

Khatrell Rashon Harris, 21, of Bald Eagle Way in Riverdale, Ga., was arrested in Richmond County and was charged with three counts of armed robbery, robbery by force, aggravated battery, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He’s being held in the Richmond County jail without bond, according to jail records.

A Grovetown man accused of molesting two teen girls was sentenced to prison Wednesday.


At sentencing hearing in Columbia County, Landon “Dock” Norman III, 41, pled guilty to first degree cruelty to children, enticing a child for indecent purposes, child molestation and criminal attempt to influence a witness. Superior Court Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet sentenced Norman to 15 years in prison followed by 10 years on probation and a $1,500 fine.

Globetrotter's visit brings anti-bullying message   03/13/13 - 12:12am

A Harlem Globetrotter visited Riverside Elementary School Friday with a special message.

Herb “Flight Time” Lang’s visit was a surprise to the entire student body and was part of the Globetrotter’s ABC’s of Bullying Prevention campaign.

“Lucky for us, we can do a lot of things with the basketball,” Lang said. “We can have fun with (the pupils) and deliver the message and have fun with them at the same time.”

Lang showed off some basketball tricks and even taught a few to some students who answered questions about bullying prevention.

County historian Janette Kelley dies   03/10/13 - 1:05am

Columbia County lost a historian Wednesday with the death of Janette S. Kelley.

Kelley, 73, was one of the first historians to compile the county’s history into a book.

“She was one of the first who really went to a lot of trouble to write a history of the county,” said Barbara Seaborn, a fellow author of county history.

Kelley published two books about the county – Our Heritage: Personalities, 1754-1983, Columbia County, Georgia and Columbia County, Then and Now.

Several people were indicted Wednesday by a Columbia County Grand Jury.

Javantroi Perez Walden, 34, was indicted on two counts of sexual battery, simple battery, driving under the influence, fleeing, obstruction and several traffic charges in connection to a Dec. 23 incident when he assaulted a deputy and rammed a patrol car, according to court documents released Thursday.

The man charged in the Sept. 12 traffic death of 19-year-old Jordan Elizabeth White was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty in the case Thursday in Columbia County Superior Court.

Dean's daughter allegedly recants molestation claims   03/06/13 - 2:51pm

More than a year after former Columbia County Commissioner Scott Dean's daughter testified that he molested her, she wrote a letter to his wife recanting her story.


Scott Dean was convicted of two counts of child molestation in December 2011. He's currently serving his 20-year prison sentence at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Ga.

Crime numbers falling in Columbia County   03/06/13 - 1:04am

Collaboration is a common theme in Columbia County law enforcement.

Officials largely credit a working relationship with residents and law enforcement agencies for the sharp drop in reported crimes in 2012.

“This was the best they’ve ever been since I was sheriff,” said Columbia County Sheriff Clay Whittle, who took over as the county’s lead lawman after a 1995 special election.
