New ambulances are mobile treatment centers   04/03/13 - 12:07am

Ambulances serving Columbia County are more than just a ride to the hospital.

They’re also technologically advanced mobile medical treatment centers.

“A lot of folks that we go to still look at this as a ride,” Gold Cross Emergency Medical Service paramedic John Evans said. “They have no idea that they are actually being taken care of on the way to the hospital.”

Gold Cross provides five ambulances, staffed with a paramedic and emergency medical technician, to serve Columbia County 24 hours a day. A sixth is staffed and on call on weekdays.

The defense is expected to begin presenting evidence Wednesday in the federal bribery trial of a Grovetown city councilman in Alabama.

The trial of Leland J. “Sonny” McDowell began Monday in Montgomery, Ala.. Government attorney completed prosecution evidence and rested late Tuesday. McDowell’s attorneys are expected to begin presenting evidence Wednesday morning, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Clark Morris, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office Middle Alabama District.

Columbia County authorities are looking for two people they say used credit cards stolen from an Appling man last week.

The 55-year-old man called deputies Thursday when his daughter walked outside their rural home and discovered his 2010 Ford Mustang missing, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The car wasn’t locked and the keys were inside. The man’s credit cards also were inside the car.

An Evans woman was charged Tuesday with falsely accusing a deputy of raping her during a weekend traffic stop.

Kelsey Alane Long, 23, of Evans, was charged with making a false report of a crime, possession of a Schedule III drug, possession of a controlled substance, obstruction and several traffic charges. She’s being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

A Grovetown city councilman is facing federal bribery charges as his trial began Monday in Alabama.

The trial of Leland J. “Sonny” McDowell began Monday in Montgomery, Ala., with opening statements and the beginning of testimony, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Clark Morris, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office Middle Alabama District.

McDowell, who pled not guilty to the charges June 15, is accused of offering a kickback to a former Alabama Department of Public Safety employee in 2007.

A teacher caught two Evans High School students inappropriately touching each other while reviewing video surveillance footage Friday.

The Culinary Arts teacher told an assistant principal that she was reviewing footage from the camera in her room to investigate a lost book bag when she saw two students fondling each other on March 25, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s office incident report. In the video, it appeared the students were rubbing each other’s genital areas during class.

Woman accuses deputy of traffic stop rape   04/01/13 - 2:38pm

A woman being cited for traffic violations early Sunday accused the deputy who stopped her of rape.

The woman said she was raped by a deputy in the front yard of a Martinez home during a traffic stop. The deputy taking her complaint told the woman that making a false report of a crime was a felony, but she wanted to file the report anyway, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Several Greenbrier soccer players sent to alternative school   03/29/13 - 5:05pm

More than half of Greenbrier High School’s boys varsity soccer team will finish the school year at the Columbia County Alternative School.

Eighteen of the team’s 25 players were kicked off the team and suspended from school last week pending a disciplinary hearing Friday morning.

Several former Greenbrier High School boys soccer players accused of underage drinking on a recent school trip will face discipline at school system hearings today.

Of Greenbrier’s 25 varsity boys soccer players, 18 were suspended for 10 days pending the disciplinary hearing.

Grovetown High student pepper sprayed   03/28/13 - 1:56pm

A school system safety officer pepper sprayed a Grovetown High School student after she fought with him Tuesday.

The school safety officer was asked to help with an unruly student in a classroom at about 2:30 p.m. The student told an assistant principal to stay away and walked out of the class. The assistant principal and officer told the student to go to the office, but she said she wanted to go home and went to her locker.
