Columbia County authorities are looking for a man they say recently broke the window out of vehicle parked in front of a Martinez home.


A 37-year-old Martinez man called deputies Tuesday claiming someone broke the back driver’s side door out of his 2003 Lincoln Navigator a week earlier. The man reviewed footage from the video surveillance system monitoring his Orchard Hill Drive property.

Residents are invited to celebrate nature Saturday at Earth Fest 2012.


The festival, in tribute to Earth Day, will start at 10 a.m. and last until 2 p.m. at the Amphitheater and Memorial Gardens behind the Columbia County Library in Evans.


The festival will include a raptor flight show at noon. The show will feature several birds including hawks and owls. As a precaution, no pets are allowed at the event.


Children’s entertainment including nature-related arts and crafts, games and inflatables.

Magistrate Christine confirms Army National Guard activation   05/04/12 - 5:34pm

Columbia County Chief Magistrate Bobby confirmed Friday that he’s been activated through the Georgia Army National Guard.

“As of May 14, I am going to be on active duty,” Christine said. “I’m being mobilized to backfill an active duty officer who is going overseas.”

Christine opted not to seek re-election because of the likely activation.

Several plead not guilty at Columbia County arraignments   05/04/12 - 4:18pm

Several people charged with crimes in Columbia County pled not guilty in an Evans courtroom Friday afternoon.

At the arraignment hearings, three men allegedly involved in a fatal home invasion in February pled not guilty to murder charges.

Leonard Jamal Walton, 18, of Maywood Drive in Martinez; Jose Lopez-Gamero, 21, of North Belair Road in Evans; and Edward Albert Brown III, 19, of Bridgeton Road in Augusta, were indicted on murder, criminal attempt to commit robbery, burglary and simple battery, according to court documents.

A Grovetown mother recently banned her son from her home after she discovered he’d sold some of her clothing and accessories to an Evans consignment shop.

The 40-year-old said she recently noticed several purses and articles of clothing missing from the closet of her Country Glen Circle home.

While shopping with her 18-year-old son Thursday at Uptown Cheapskate, she found one of her purses on a rack for sale.

Teen's manslaughter hearing delayed   05/04/12 - 11:16am

The case against a Harlem teen accused of fatally shooting his 13-year-old friend was continued Friday morning after his attorney was injured in a car wreck.

Zachary Provance, 14, was scheduled to face charges connected to the shooting death of Eleanor Grace “Elle’” Kelly, 13, also of Harlem, in Columbia County Juvenile Court Friday.

But his attorney, Michael Spence, was rear-ended while traveling to the Regional Youth Detention Center Thursday evening to meet with Provance, Juvenile Court Judge Douglas Flanagan said.

Expansion projects continue for several Columbia County churches.

The congregation of Second Mount Moriah Baptist Church recently began attending services in a new sanctuary on Appling-Harlem Highway.

The church moved into the new sanctuary in March and held a dedication ceremony on April 15, said the Rev. Henderson Roberson, pastor of the church.

“We’re thoroughly satisfied,” Roberson said. “We’re enjoying it.”

The 125-year-old church is located on Bell Street in Harlem. That building, constructed in the 1960s, has problems.

The creative juices will flow Saturday as artists and appreciators gather for Art in the Park.

The seventh annual arts festival, put on by Columbia County Arts Inc., will include painters, jewelers, fiber artists and weavers creating works live at the event.

“I think it’s fun because it inspires people,” said Cyndy Epps, chairwoman of the event and former president of the Artists’ Guild of Columbia County.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Columbia County Amphitheater and Memorial Gardens behind the Evans library.

Early spring could bring more mosquitoes   04/30/12 - 11:53am

A mild winter preceded spring-like weather in Columbia County a little early this year.

But warming temperatures and spring showers also bring out mosquitoes.

“It is going to make a huge difference,” county Health Department Environmental Health Specialist Andrea Frazier said of the early warming.

Frazier is a member of the Columbia County Integrated Mosquito Management Program, which started meeting monthly for the season on April 10.

Ban on outdoor burning begins today   05/01/12 - 3:54pm

Those living in Columbia and Richmond counties have two days before the seasonal ban on outdoor burning goes into effect.

The five-month ban, starting Tuesday, affects 54 counties. It is part of the state Environmental Protection Division’s effort to improve air quality during smog season.

The ban prohibits the burning of yard debris, including leaves, limbs and pine straw. EPD instituted a year-round ban on burning household garbage.
