An Augusta toddler died in a Thursday afternoon wreck that seriously injured her mother.

Sky Allen, 2, died from injuries she sustained in a single-car wreck on Ray Owens Road in front of North Columbia Elementary School, according to Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins. An autopsy is expected to be performed Friday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta, Collins said.

A plan to build an outdoor venue to mimic the former train depot in Harlem has hit a few detours but is still on track.

Harlem officials intend to build a new city recreation building resembling the depot that was torn down decades ago, but they aren’t sure exactly what CSX Transportation will allow near the tracks and in the railroad’s right of way.

“They didn’t completely shoot it down right off the bat,” City Manager Jason Rizner said. “They asked for more detailed drawings that show distances from the center of the railroad tracks.”

The seasonal ban on outdoor burning goes into effect today for residents of Columbia and Richmond counties.

The five-month ban affects 54 counties and is part of the state Environmental Projection Division’s effort to improve air quality during smog season.

The ban prohibits the burning of yard debris, including leaves, limbs and pine straw, through September. Burning household garbage is prohibited year-round by the EPD.

An Evans woman called authorities Friday after finding urine in her kitchen cabinet.

The 32-year-old woman said she found a sealed container with urine inside the cabinet. The woman said she remembered washing the container, putting on the lid and putting it in the cabinet. When she opened the cabinet Friday evening, it contained a yellow liquid with a strong urine smell.

The woman said her windows and doors stay locked.
