The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether Columbia County Commission candidate Lee Benedict violated election law by posting a photo of his ballot on Facebook.

Two members of the county Board of Elections met with county attorney Doug Batchelor on Tuesday to discuss Benedict’s photo posting. Batchelor recommended referring that and another incident to the sheriff’s office. “There doesn’t seem to me to be any criminal intent,” Batchelor said.

A Grovetown man was arrested late Wednesday after beating his ex-girlfriend unconscious.

George Scott Dillard, 45, of Sugar Creek Drive, was charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, burglary and two counts of cruelty to children.

Dillard’s 25-year-old ex-girlfriend called deputies, who found her beaten and hysterical inside her Ridge Crossing apartment just after 9 p.m.

Four people were arrested late Tuesday after sheriff’s investigators from two counties searched a Martinez apartment.

Personnel from the Columbia County and Richmond County sheriff’s offices searched Charles Potter Jr.’s apartment on Cedar Lane and two vehicles parked there. Potter, 33, originally gave investigators a false name and was inside with three others – Tyre Dion Moton, 31; Candace Michelle Lawson, 27; and Paul Anthony McDaniel, 33.

As a probation officer for juveniles, Kari Poss tried to keep children on the right track.

She’s leaving Columbia County Juvenile Court after 12 years to help them even more.

Poss will become the director of the Family Resource and Evening Reporting Center in Harlem.

“She’s been here for many years and done so many good things,” Juvenile Court Judge Doug Flanagan said. “I don’t want her to go … I’m going to miss Mrs. Poss.

“I’ve told her that if it doesn’t work out, we expect her back here.”
