Grovetown stores expect alcohol sales to drop   04/01/12 - 12:01am

For months, Lee Griffin maneuvered through the maze of beer cases stacked inside the Grovetown Circle K store she manages.

Since Dec. 25, the city has been the only local place other than the city of Aiken to buy packaged alcohol on Sundays.

“We do extremely well on Sundays,” Griffin said. “We don’t have room to move because I have beer in my office. I have beer in the cooler. I have beer in the hallway. There’s beer everywhere.”

But starting today, Grovetown no longer is the only location this side of the Savannah River where people can buy alcohol.

Spring break camps for children   03/28/12 - 12:05am

During a week when golf takes over, there are several camps for Columbia County children to enjoy.

The Marshall Family Y in Evans is holding a day camp Monday through April 6.

The camp, which runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily, is for children ages 5-12 years old. Campers will play games, make crafts and play sports, said Marshall Family Y Wellness Director Shonna Sargent.

Campers will need to bring a snack, sack lunch and a water bottle. Early drop-off is available at 7 a.m. and late pick-up until 6 p.m.

Boy honored for donation to military personnel   03/18/12 - 12:02am

Bailey Lewis enjoyed a unique birthday celebration Wednesday in Evans.

CSRA Home Connections members celebrated the Hephzibah Middle School sixth-grader’s 12th birthday and his donation to help deployed military personnel at the local business marketing group’s networking breakfast and spring success seminar at Be My Guest.

Bailey heard about the group’s Operation Hand-Warmer on the radio. Instead of buying the video game he was saving for, Bailey opted to donate more than $100 he’d earned cleaning beagle cages to the cause.

Grovetown library 'friends' holding book sale   03/07/12 - 1:00am

The Friends of the Grovetown Library is calling readers to a book sale Saturday.

The sale will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Liberty Park Community Center on Newmantown Road.

“We have about 4,000 books of all different kinds – hardback, paperback, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, novels, all kinds of good stuff,” said Grovetown City Councilman and event organizer Sonny McDowell.

Many of the books, especially novels, are in “like-new, bookshelf condition,” McDowell said.

All books, new and used, cost $1.

Leah fire station might close   03/04/12 - 1:07am

Columbia County commissioners might decide Tuesday to close an unstaffed fire station near Pollards Corner.

The property where Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue station No. 15 is located on Burks Mountain Road is owned by Robert Pollard, county Emergency and Operations Division Director Pam Tucker said.

“The lease is in effect until 2016,” Tucker said. “Some discussion with the property owner indicated that he does have another use for the property.”

Artists to paint to music at free show   02/19/12 - 1:02am

Music gets Stephanie “Sunshine” Forbes’ creative juices flowing.

Forbes hopes to move other painters with music at the third annual Free Art Show Concert on Saturday.

The band art project will feature 16 artists painting on stage as live music influences them.

“I love seeing the art being created,” said the 20-year-old. “It’s inspiring. It’s motivating and it’s really awesome to see what someone will come up with in less than six minutes.”

Vegas-style charity gala set for Saturday   02/08/12 - 1:07am

Some Vegas-style fun is coming to Columbia County.

Organizers of the Columbia County Charity Gala, a Vegas-style event, will hold an evening of casino games, big-band music, dancing and celebrity impersonators to benefit three county charities.

The third annual gala will start at 7 p.m. Saturday at Savannah Rapids Pavilion. Tickets cost $80 per person, or $150 per couple.

All proceeds will be split between the Columbia County Arts Development Fund, Columbia County Cares food pantry and Teenage Years 101, which was added this year.

Wife inspired Evans man's book   01/29/12 - 1:07am

Dr. Russ Holloman’s in-depth theological discussions with his wife were the inspiration for his latest book.

Holloman, a retired Air Force psychologist, private therapist and college professor, released And Now, A Word From Our Creator in October through WestBow Press, a Christian book-publishing company.

Holloman said he and his wife, Lenora, who passed away in September 2008, had evening devotionals in which they agreed to discuss a single word.

“We became fascinated with it,” Holloman said.

Dean sentenced for child molestation   01/29/12 - 1:07am

A former Columbia County commissioner convicted of child molestation was sentenced to prison Friday morning.

Superior Court Judge James G. Blanchard Jr. ordered Scott Dean to serve 20 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation during a sentencing hearing in Evans.

“In my mind, he should be treated no differently than anyone else convicted of a similar crime,” Blanchard said.

A jury convicted Dean, 42, on Dec. 16 of two counts of child molestation. Each count carried a state-mandated sentence of five to 20 years.

Center for juvenile offenders to open in Harlem   01/15/12 - 1:01am

A new Harlem resource center will give first-time juvenile offenders a second chance.

The Family Resource and Evening Reporting Center, a partnership between Columbia County Community Connections and Columbia County Juvenile Court, opened this week at 212 N. Louisville Street.

“If we don’t come together as one, we’re not accomplishing anything,” said Juvenile Court Intake and Probation Officer Kari Poss, who helped create the center.
