Fireworks pose fire risk   07/06/12 - 8:56am

 

Flashing and sparkling fireworks are among the more anticipated Fourth of July celebrations.

But fire officials worry that the festivities could spark a few unintended fires.

“It’s July. It’s dry, so there’s always that danger,” Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Danny Kuhlmann said.

In 2010, fireworks caused about 15,500 reported fires, including 1,100 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires and 14,100 outside and other fires, according to the National Fire Prevention Association.

Banjo-B-Que brings bluegrass, barbecue to Evans   05/24/12 - 9:53pm

 As trucks and trailers and RVs pulled into Evans Towne Center Park Thursday afternoon, the Fatback's BBQ and Rib Shack team put the finishing touches on their barbecue camp.

Brothers Corey and Bobby Brinson and friend Rick Edwards planned to relax for the evening before they fire up the smoker for the third annual Papa Joe's Banjo-B-Que Bluegrass Festival and Barbecue Cook-Off.

The festival, sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, begins at 5 p.m. Friday. Live entertainment and other events will continue Saturday at 11 a.m.

Churches offering Easter sunrise services for the community   04/06/12 - 1:56pm

 

Residents and out-of-town guests are invited to celebrate Easter at sunrise services conducted by several Columbia County churches.

The sixth annual Com-munity Easter Sunrise Service, organized by Mosaic United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church of Evans, will be held at 7 a.m. Sunday at the Evans Towne Center Park.

“It’s very simple. We keep it to an hour,” Mosaic pastor the Rev. Carolyn Moore said.

Moore said she knows Easter also is the final day of the Masters Tournament.

Murder trial begins after opening arguments   03/07/12 - 12:20pm

As the murder trial of 15-year-old Aaron Schmidt got underway Monday afternoon, prosecutors portrayed him as a cold-blooded killer with an ever-shifting story, while his defense attorney said he should be guilty only of manslaughter in the death of Alana Calahan.

With a jury seated Monday morning, opening statements in Schmidt's trial for the shooting death of his 14-year-old Harlem neighbor gave way to witness testimony that included Calahan's parents.
