Pavilion to resemble Harlem train depot   07/18/12 - 12:09am

Harlem officials intend for a new city recreation building to resemble the site’s original structure – a train depot that was torn down decades ago.

When the Harlem fire station on South Hicks Street is moved to the city’s new public safety building, plans are to replace it with an open-air pavilion. The side facade facing the railroad tracks will mimic the railroad depot that was there for about 70 years.

“So that if you come from that direction (of the railroad tracks), what you see looks just like the old railroad depot is back,” Harlem Mayor Bobby Culpepper said.

First phase of Lakeside athletic complex likely to be approved   07/11/12 - 12:09am

Work will soon begin to develop a new athletic complex behind Lakeside High School.

Columbia County commissioners are expected Tuesday to approve a $3.1 million bid for site preparation for the complex, planned for 70 acres behind the school’s baseball fields.

The Board of Education and the county are sharing the first-phase costs of the project, which would prepare the site for construction, county Construction and Maintenance Division Director Matt Schlachter said at the June 26 public works committee meeting.

Lakeside High's first valedictorian now commanding submarine   05/16/12 - 12:14am

Valedictorians from Columbia County’s high schools are perfecting their speeches in preparation for Saturday’s graduation ceremonies.

This time 23 years ago, Navy Commander Adam Palmer was in the same situation, writing the speech he’d give as Lakeside High School’s first valedictorian in 1989.

From that moment, Palmer never fathomed the depths to which his career would sink.

In a ceremony this past fall, Palmer took the helm of the U.S.S. West Virginia – a nuclear-powered, ballistic missile submarine, also known as SSBN 736.

Grovetown officials review investigation into employee misconduct   04/11/12 - 12:01am

Grovetown officials decided at a Monday meeting to take more time to review an investigation into allegations of misconduct by a city employee.

In late March, the city council hired a private investigator to conduct the probe of a city Department of Public Safety employee who has not been publicly identified.

After a three-hour closed session at the monthly council meeting, Mayor George James said that he and the City Council members will take two weeks to review the lengthy findings of the investigation.

Grovetown officials expect to approve city redesign plan   04/08/12 - 12:05am

Grovetown officials expect to approve a plan Monday that might change the look of the city center.

“All the council, they’ve seen the (presentation) and I haven’t heard any negativity out of them whatsoever,” Mayor George James said of an Urban Redevelopment Plan the city council will consider during their monthly meeting.

Grovetown residents were able to view the plan, which city officials developed with the CSRA Regional Commission, during a public meeting last week.

Community Easter egg hunts on the way   03/28/12 - 12:01am

Children need to dig out their baskets as the Easter bunny soon will leave behind a few thousand hidden treats.

The bunny will visit the Harlem City Park from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday for the city’s eighth annual Easter Egg Hunt.

About 2,000 eggs, including some prize eggs, will be hidden on the park’s three athletic fields, said event organizer Denise Carter. Children will be divided into three groups – ages 1 to 3, 4 to 6, and 7 to 10.

“The Easter Bunny will be there,” Carter said.

The hunting begins at 11 a.m.

Banjo-B-Que moving to Evans park   03/21/12 - 12:01am

A popular bluegrass festival and barbecue cook-off is moving to Evans.

The third annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que, a two-day festival, will be held at Evans Towne Center Park May 25-26.

The festival, which attracted national musical acts and 72 competition barbecue cooking teams last year, was held at the Hippodrome in North Augusta the past two years, said Christy Beckham, an event organizer with sponsor AB Beverage in Evans.

Harlem puts Sunday sales on ballot   03/21/12 - 12:09am

Harlem officials agreed Monday to let residents decide whether to sell packaged alcohol inside the city on Sunday.

At the monthly city council meeting, they approved placing a Sunday sales referendum on the ballot in the July 31 primary election. In January, they asked City Attorney Barry Fleming to draw up the necessary resolutions to place the referendum on the primary ballot.

The referendum would allow the sale of packaged alcohol at convenience, grocery and package stores from 12:30-11z;30 p.m. on Sunday.

Columbia County crime statistics show most burglaries non-violent   03/18/12 - 12:01am

Two recent high-profile burglaries in Columbia County spotlight the rising numbers of those crimes.

On Feb. 29, a Martinez 15-year-old shot and killed a burglar who, along with another man, forced his way into the Martinez apartment the boy shares with his parents.

Earlier that week, a Harlem man held someone trying to break into his neighbor’s home at gunpoint until authorities arrived.

The number of burglaries in Columbia County rose 31.8 percent, from 346 in 2010 to 456 in 2011, according to recently released crime statistics.

Reynolds named Harlem Citizen of the Year   03/11/12 - 1:05am

Harlem residents call Loreen Reynolds the Energizer Bunny: giving, efficient, selfless, even bossy.

For all those reasons, she was named on Thursday as the Harlem Woman’s Club 2011 Citizen of the Year.

“I do a lot, but there’s a lot of people that do it with me,” said Reynolds, when surprised with the award.

Harlem United Methodist Church Pastor Tom Drake, in a letter read at the ceremony, said Reynolds has a heart for serving others.
