Joseph Banks remembers driving on Interstate 20 early Saturday and everything being fine. The next thing he remembers is his Ford F-350 flying across the grass, hitting the guardrail “and just eating it up.”

Within three seconds, his truck burst into flames.

He was trapped between his seat and the dashboard, which had been crushed by the concrete “weigh station” sign the truck hit near mile marker 187.

Hintze cuts his hair

For John Russell Hintze, getting into the United States Naval Academy was hard. But for the 17-year-old Grovetown High School graduate, cutting his rock-and-roll hair for the first time since he was 10 might have been harder.

“I feel naked,” the metal band guitarist said after his mother chopped off his hair Sunday in front of his friends and family outside their family’s home.

His mother, Katrina Hintze, carefully kept his dark brown hair in pony tails so John Russell could send it to Locks of Love, something he insisted on.

Lakeside High mom arrested for after-prom party for minors   04/16/12 - 7:40pm

A mother was sent to jail and 20 Lakeside High School students and three other minors were cited after Columbia County deputies broke up an after-prom party in Evans early Saturday morning. Around 1 a.m., deputies were called to the 3500 block of Greenway Drive in reference to a noise complaint, a sheriff’s report says. When deputies arrived at the house, they saw several teenagers drinking in the driveway. The teens scattered, some running behind the house toward Furys Ferry Road, according to the report.

Three arrests made in fatal Martinez apartment burglary   03/06/12 - 9:51am

Columbia County authorities have arrested three suspected accomplices of Justin Anthony Stephens, who was shot and killed while attempting to burglarize an apartment.

Edward Albert Brown III, 19, Jose Lopez-Gamero, 21, and Leonard Jamal Walton, 18, were arrested Saturday and are being held at Columbia County Detention Center without bond.

Investigators said at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday Stephens and Walton, both dressed in black and wearing bandanas over their faces, knocked on a Petersburg Square apartment door and forced their way inside.

Crowds line up in Grovetown to buy alcohol   12/19/11 - 1:04pm

Sunday sales of alcohol underway in Grovetown.

This was the first Sunday Grovetown stores were able to sell alcohol, and customers were lining up.

After a unanimous vote by city council Dec. 12 to amend the city’s alcohol ordinance, Sunday carry-out sales of beer, wine and liquor started with a strong turnout.

Because GT Package Shop and Billy Jack’s were both closed, customers were only able to buy beer or wine, but that did not stop them.

The call came in at 11:15 p.m. Thursday. The Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue’s shift 3 headed out to a reported structure fire at Petersburg Place Town Homes on Petersburg Circle.

On the way, the team got information from dispatch that there might be a woman in the house. Battalion Chief James Burnett handed out assignments.
