While weather and a compressed timeline might have kept crowds away from the Par Tee at the Park event held at Evans Towne Center Park during Masters Week, that hasn’t kept the promoter from asking for more.

At Tuesday’s Columbia County Management and Financial Services committee meeting, County Administrator Scott Johnson presented a proposal to grant use of Evans Towne Center Park to the Savor Society of Carmel, Ind.

Starting Sunday, it will be legal to buy alcohol on the Sabbath in Columbia County.

While consumers might find joy in the end of the county’s Sunday prohibition, package stores are more ambivalent about the change.

“I looked into what this might mean a year ago and really, it seems like sort of a mixed bag,” said Richard Reeves, the owner of Spirits on Washington Road in Evans.

He said that while some states have reported a sharp rise in revenues based on the introduction of Sunday sales – as much as 10 or 15 percent – others have had more modest increases.

Martinez resident Cheri Bowers has cold cuts to thank for a future vacation.

The grand prize winner of the Boar’s Head Discover Bold Flavor Sweepstakes, Bowers received a red carpet reception at the Publix on Fury’s Ferry Road. Her prize is a trip for two to one of four locations - Jamaica, Brazil or Baja or Veracruz, Mexico. She said that while family members are campaigning for Jamaica, she would like to try and apply the prize toward a ticket to Australia.

“I just haven’t decided yet,” she said.

The Columbia County commission is in favor of seeing the area’s combined universities grow, but not GRU.

The Commission passed a resolution its Tuesday meeting requesting that the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia reconsider the name of the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences University. The Board of Regents recently voted to name the school Georgia Regents University. The decision has been met with strong opposition.
