Building permits down, home values up in September   10/14/12 - 12:05am

There was good news and bad news in Columbia County’s housing market in September.

Development Services Director Richard Harmon told the Columbia County Commission’s Development Services Committee that there was a significant decrease in residential permits in September, with just 65 permits issued compared to 131 a year ago.

“I’m not sure why this is,” he said. “It could be because we had those two 100-year storms or it might be because it is an election year and people have other things on their mind.”

Members of the Columbia County Development Services Committee were greeted with both good news and bad news regarding the local housing market. Development services director Richard Harmon reported a significant decrease in residential permits in September. He said that there had been 131 issued in September 2011 and only 65 in 2012.

Columbia County Commission discusses rising water requirements   09/09/12 - 12:02am

Columbia County commissioners were prompted to ponder the price of precipitation during Tuesday’s meeting.

Martinez resident Pam Williams approached the commission with concerns about the stormwater system near her home. She said the failure of a storm drain Aug. 7 caused extensive flooding, bringing more than two feet of water into her home.

Stormwater study commissioned for Columbia County neighborhoods   09/02/12 - 12:06am

Recent rains have caused serious flooding in several Columbia County neighborhoods, prompting the Public Works Services committee to take action.

At a scheduled meeting of the committee Tuesday, Columbia County Water Utility Director Billy Clayton asked commissioners to approve stormwater studies for Merlin Way, Rhodes Hill, Watervale and Quail Creek Road. He also suggested that a study conducted at Reed Creek be acted upon.
