Weather affecting playoff schedules   04/17/13 - 5:05pm

Predicted thunderstorms on Friday have caused local high school sports schedules to be altered.

The Lakeside girls and Evans boys, in the semifinals of the Region 2-AAAAA soccer tournament, will be traveling to Houston County on Thursday. Lakeside will play at 5:30 p.m. and Evans at 7 p.m.

Augusta Prep has also moved four home contests to Thursday, two of which hold state playoff implications.

Augusta Christian baseball coach resigns   04/17/13 - 12:15am

After hiring a new baseball coach over the summer, Augusta Christian is in the market for a new one next year after the current coach quit.

In his first year at the helm of the Lions program, Tom Abdo led the Lions to an 8-10 record, but abruptly resigned April 5, just before the beginning of spring break. He is not remaining at the school in any capacity.

His other duties were teaching and coaching the middle school’s football team.

Baldowski named Harlem citizen of the year   04/17/13 - 12:12am

Jenny Baldowski is mom to more than just her two sons.

Her involvement with Scouting programs, wounded warriors and Special Olympics were cited as just a few of the reasons Baldowski was honored Thursday as the 2012 Harlem Woman’s Club Citizen of the Year.

Baldowski, a graduate of North Augusta High School and USC Aiken, was joined by her adult sons Neal and Phillip at the presentation and expressed surprise and gratitude for the recognition.

Heath Brace has been playing soccer for 12 years, but that isn’t what the freshman has a state championship under his belt for.

Recruited after the school year began, Brace helped the Lions football team to their first undefeated season and a state title as the punter and kicker, converting 58 of 63 point-after attempts and making three of four field goal attempts with a long of 40 yards.

Greenbrier qualifies for state tournament with region tournament win   04/16/13 - 10:32pm

Both Greenbrier soccer teams punched their tickets to the 2012-2013 GHSA Class AAAAA State Soccer Tournaments Tuesday night.

Both teams entered as No. 1 seeds, facing No. 4 seeded Jones County in their respective Region 2-AAAAA tournament openers and each won with relative ease. The Wolfpack won 5-1 while the Lady Wolfpack won 10-0 in a mercy-rule shortened contest.

“It was a good first game in the region tournament, always good to get that one under your belt,” said Wolfpack coach Chip Warren.

Field athletes get track championships started at Grovetown High School   04/16/13 - 3:13pm

The Region 2-AAAAA Track Championship got underway Tuesday morning at Grovetown High School.

While running events were scheduled to finish with finals on Thursday, field events were completed Tuesday afternoon.

The region championships are the first in a two-step process to getting to the state meet, with the top four in each event qualifying for the sectionals the following week at Grovetown.

Greenbrier got off to a good start in the pole vault as Michael Furman won the boys crown while McLain Broussard was tops on the girls side.

Evans blanks Harlem in season finale   04/17/13 - 12:16am

With much more on the line in the near future for both teams, Monday night’s baseball game between the Evans Knights and Harlem Bulldogs turned into a casual affair.

After beating Harlem 16-2 to open the 2013 campaign, the Knights ended their regular season with a 10-0 whitewashing of the Bulldogs in six innings.

The atmosphere more resembled that of a major league spring training game than one of the county’s oldest rivalry at the end of the season. Coming out of spring break, and competing in separate regions, both teams had the bigger picture in mind.

Father and daughter remain close, competitors   04/14/13 - 12:07am

Grovetown High School head track coach Rodney Tyson might find himself conflicted when the Region 2-AAAAA Region Championships are held at Grovetown beginning Tuesday, April 16.

With the shift in regions this year, Grovetown was placed in the same region as Greenbrier, where Tyson’s daughter Kayla is a standout senior sprinter for the Lady Wolfpack. In the past, it was mainly bragging rights on the line when the teams met at the annual Columbia County meet. But now the stakes are higher.

Hard not to be a gawker at the Masters   04/14/13 - 12:07am

While schools were out this week I had a chance to take in a little golf.

That’s one of the perks of working for The Chronicle’s Columbia County bureau: getting to work the pinnacle of the sport, The Masters.

For some of the journalists there, I’m sure it’s just a run-of-the-mill week covering a major sporting event, not unlike the World Series or the Super Bowl. But for me, it was definitely a thrill.

Lacrosse a bonding experience for Greenbrier girls   04/14/13 - 12:07am

The end of the school year will mark the end of a journey for four Greenbrier High School girls lacrosse players.

Seniors Savannah Allen, Hannah Hutto, Meredith Keskula and Taylor Mutimer were freshmen on a fledgling program entering its third year in 2010. The Lady Wolfpack won just two games in their first two years. With a win in one of the last two games this year, the Lady Wolfpack will have a winning season for the first time in school history.
