After winning its first six games of the season, the Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack softball team lost two, one in nine innings to Madison County and the other in 10 to Walnut Grove.

Head coach Garrett Black was worried about a letdown, but his players responded with a 9-0, five-inning home win over Cross Creek Tuesday night.

“We have a lot of work to do, but at this stage of the game, I’m pleased with where we are,” said Black. “Two games we lost – they beat us. We didn’t help them out, they earned it.”

Not many high schoolers can say that they have been named to an All-Madden Team. Lakeside senior JaVeon Brigham can.

Brigham was named to the 2012 IMG All-Madden Team after participating in the IMG Academy’s invitation-only All-Madden Mini-Camp in Bradenton, Fla., July 27-29.

IMG Academy trains all levels of athletes in no less than seven sports and has a variety of football camps throughout the year. During his three days there, Brigham and other players from around the world participated in drills, classroom
sessions, strength training and scrimmages.

While the 2012 high school volleyball season begins in earnest Thursday, one county team already has a game under its belt.

The Evans Lady Knights started their season Tuesday with a home match against Westside.

The Lady Knights went 11-7 in 2011 and advanced to the state AAAA tournament, but head coach Lance Schuckers isn’t sure what to expect from his team.

“I haven’t been this young since ’07, my first year head coaching,” he said of his untested group. “We’re behind as far as our experience, but we’ll get there.”

The Evans Lady Knights had a good night Tuesday.

After opening the softball season 1-3-1 at a tournament on the road, the Lady Knights took advantage of five Westside errors to cruise to a 9-1 victory.

“It’s early in the season and you’re just trying to see how they handle certain things,” said Lady Knights head coach Colette Cassedy. “I personally thought we could have played a little bit sharper.”
