Augusta Christian’s Sarah Harrison might have been at the 2012 South Carolina Independent School Association Girls’ Golf State Championships by herself, but she definitely was in the thick of things.

Augusta Christian does not have a girls team, but under SCISA rules, individuals are allowed to participate in the state tournament.

So on Oct. 8, Harrison, a sophomore, joined the competition at Orangeburg Country Club in Orangeburg, S.C., fighting cool temperatures and rainy weather.

The Evans-based online tax preparation service TaxSlayer.com will remain in the racing business.Tuesday, JR Motorsports announced that TaxSlayer.com, which has been associated with the Dale Earnhardt-owned race team since 2011, had signed a long-term sponsorship agreement.

Starting with the 2013 season-opener at Daytona, TaxSlayer.com will receive primary paint schemes in 17 Nationwide Series races with Earnhardt Jr. at the wheel.

Area teams ready to battle for state spots   10/11/12 - 1:32pm

Greenbrier plays host to the Area 2-AAAAA volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday.

It’s fitting.

The Lady Wolfpack began the season winning its first 17 games before losing to North Augusta on Sept. 12. The team ended the year winning its last 16 games, going 6-0 in area play and wrapping the regular season 33-1.

As the No. 1 seed, the Lady Wolfpack have a bye Friday night and begin play at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Greenbrier moves on in state tournament   10/10/12 - 11:03pm

At the beginning of the year, Greenbrier head coach Garrett Black wasn’t sure what kind of team he was going to have, especially with one senior on the squad.

The Lady Wolfpack showed what kind of team they are when they put on a hitting display in the first round of the Class AAAAA State Softball Playoffs against the Lady Wildcats of Richmond Hill.

Greenbrier (27-6) banged out 24 hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader, winning game one 12-5, taking the nightcap 11-2.

Dynasty brewing at Harlem Middle School   10/10/12 - 4:01pm

 

There’s a dynasty brewing in Columbia County.

For the second consecutive season, the Harlem Middle School Lady Bulldogs won the county championship while going a perfect 10-0.

The Lady Bulldogs had clinched the title before the Sept. 28 game against Columbia Middle School, but finished out the year in style, winning 11-2.

“They’re hard working and dedicated and give 100 percent,” said head coach Laura Collins. “They’re a well-oiled machine.”

Continuing their perfect ways may be difficult in 2013 as Collins loses the majority of her squad.

Athlete Spotlight-Jan Cross   10/10/12 - 12:13am

Jan Cross had her name engraved on the West Lake Ladies Golf Championship trophy for the first time in 1987, and few other names have claimed the trophy since.

Her dominance in the event includes a winning streak from 1998-2007. After trailing by as many as four strokes at the recent two-day championship, Cross came back on the final back nine to win her 20th club title.

Eddie Money and Starship featuring Mickey Thomas are set to perform at the Lady Antebellum Pavilion for the ’80s Flashback Fall Fest Friday.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.

The event celebrates the one-year anniversary of Evans Towne Center Park and the 65th anniversary of radio station WBBQ.

Tickets cost $30 for general admission in advance, $35 at the door and stagefront seats are $45. Military discounts are available and children 12 and under are admitted free.

Buddy Walk comes back to Columbia County   10/10/12 - 12:00am

The fifth Annual CSRA Buddy Walk is returning to Columbia County.

The walk to help raise funds and awareness for Down Syndrome will be Saturday at the Columbia County Amphitheater, behind the library in Evans. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. with post-walk festivities after.

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs in about one of every 733 births and affects more than 350,000 people in the United States.

Augusta Prep readying for state tournament   10/14/12 - 12:08am

When Augusta Christian’s Lady Lions welcomed Augusta Prep Tuesday night, it was a matter of two volleyball teams heading in different directions – one up and one down.

Little changed as the Lady Cavaliers won handily, 25-9, 25-7, 25-15.

The Lady Cavaliers improved to 15-5 with three regular season games left until they play host to the Georgia Independent Schools Association state tournament Oct. 26-27. The team finished Region 1-AAA play with a perfect 8-0 record and will be a No. 1 seed in the single-elimination tournament.

Sports is No. 1 for "The Money Man."   10/07/12 - 12:05am

One of the perks of working at The News-Times is getting to cover a wide variety of stories beyond sports. So when I heard Eddie Money and Starship were playing Evans Towne Center Oct. 12, I jumped at the chance to write the preview story.

Truth be told, I stole the story from our staff writer Jenna Martin, but I don’t think she minded. I’m a bit older than she is and went through my teenage years listening to them on the radio.
