Columbia County swimmers do well at state meet   02/13/13 - 1:10am

Lakeside High School freshman Katy Older and Evans sophomore Mitchell Petras were standout individual county performers Friday and Saturday at the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA State Swimming and Diving Meet at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

With 16 swimmers advancing from Friday preliminaries to Saturday’s finals in individual events, Holder qualified in the 200 yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle while Petras qualified for the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.

High school baseball set to hit the field   02/13/13 - 1:09am

It won’t take long for some of the county’s best baseball teams from 2012 to meet when the 2013 Georgia High School Association season begins Monday, Feb. 18.

Last year, Harlem went 20-9, advancing to the second round of the Class AAA state tournament and losing to eventual champion Columbus. The Bulldogs, now in AA, start their season playing AAAAA teams on three consecutive nights.

On Monday, Feb. 18, they play host to Evans, who finished 16-12 and advanced to the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament before losing to eventual champion Loganville.

Hickman signs with South Georgia   02/13/13 - 1:09am

Girls soccer practice started late at Greenbrier High School once again.

Friday, Brianna Hickman was the third Lady Wolfpack in as many days to have her letter of intent signing ceremony as she and her teammates gathered to celebrate her signing with South Georgia College (Douglas, Ga.).

The signing comes after what has been a tough high school career for Hickman, who tore an ACL in a different knee in both her sophomore and junior seasons. It also hindered her in the recruiting process.

While it’s tough to tell identical twins Austin and Ashton Roper apart off the court, on the court it gets a little easier.

Playing for the Augusta Christian Lions, who they’ve helped lead to an 18-5 record, seniors Austin (No. 22) and Ashton (No. 33) have different roles and styles.

Six advance to wrestling championships   02/13/13 - 1:05am

High School wrestlers from Region 2-AAAAA headed to Loganville, Ga., Friday and Saturday for the Georgia High School Association East Sectionals and a chance to qualify for the state championships.

After sending three to the state championships in 2012, Columbia County doubled its numbers heading to the 2012-2013 GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Tournament at the Macon Centreplex in Macon, Ga., this week.

Evans High is sending three wrestlers, Lakeside two and Grovetown one.

The Evans girls became the first county team to advance to the 2012-2013 GHSA AAAAA Girls State Basketball Tournament.

At the Region 2-AAAAA Girls Basketball Tournament’s first round at Jones County Tuesday afternoon, the No. 1 seed Lady Knights from 2A held off 2B’s No. 4 seed Jones County, 52-48.

Tied at nine after one quarter, the Lady Knights (17-7, 9-1) led 24-17 at the half but the Lady Greyhounds (8-16, 0-7) cut it to 36-32 after three quarters.

Seven ink letters of intent on signing day   02/10/13 - 1:04am

Wednesday was National Signing Day, and it was a busy day across Columbia County, with athletes committing to colleges for more than just football.

After leading the Lions to their first undefeated season and the South Carolina Independent School Association Class AAA state title, Tyler Roberson had the spotlight to himself Wednesday.

In a room crowded with family and friends, Roberson signed his letter of intent to play for the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Best-of-three format working for region play   02/10/13 - 1:03am

With the Georgia High School Association’s realignment of schools this year, Columbia County basketball teams in Region 2A-AAAAA took it upon themselves to play each other three times instead of just twice this season, and it’s working out perfectly.

Unlike last year for the boys, this year there shouldn’t be a coin flip to decide seeding for the region tournament. The seeds will be determined by play on the court, as it should be.

Augusta Christian gets split Friday night   03/06/13 - 4:16pm

 

Caroline Roberson was the catalyst in an all-around team effort Friday night as the Augusta Christian Lady Lions beat the Hammond Lady Skyhawks, 40-30.

Roberson had 14 points, three assists, two blocks and a steal and led a suffocating zone defense that made life miserable in the paint for the Lady Skyhawks.

“When they come inside that’s our house and we’re not going to let them in,” said Roberson.

Cavaliers fall just short of swim title   02/06/13 - 1:31am

The Augusta Prep boys swim team fell just short of making history Saturday at the Georgia Independent School Association State Championship.

Vying for a record-breaking fifth-consecutive boys title, the Cavaliers finished in second – two points behind the first-place finisher.
