With Tuesday night’s home win against Lakeside, Greenbrier clinched first place in Region 2-AAAA.

But the victory didn’t come easy.

The Wolfpack (14-2, 8-0) scored five runs in the first inning, only to see the Panthers strike for five of their own in the second. Lakeside scored the next six runs to take a 11-5 lead, but Greenbrier rallied for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two outs, but the Wolfpack held on for the 12-11 win.

Augusta Prep eighth-grader Salil Ghamande is tearing up golf courses as part of the Augusta Prep team and out on junior tours.

The 14-year-old is a major reason the Cavaliers jumped out to an 9-2-1 start for its 2012 golf season. He’s second on the team in scoring average (72.8), just four-tenths of a point behind freshman Joey Lawrence.

“He has a good work ethic,” said Augusta Prep community golf coach John Carney. “He’s a student of the game.”

Though golf is mostly an individual affair, being on a team is a different experience for him.

Friday night’s baseball game against South Effingham was an important one for Lakeside High School.

The Panthers have struggled in the three weeks since they last faced the Mustangs, and entered the game 0-5 in Region 2-AAAA play. Unfortunately, the Panthers’ slide continued as they lost a tough, eight-inning affair 6-5.

After a 7-1 start to the season, the Panthers (9-7, 0-6) lost to the Mustangs 15-3 on March 9.

Lakeside coach Jay Matthews kicked four players off the team after that game, and the team has lost six of eight games since.

Tuesday afternoon, the Greenbrier High girls and boys tennis teams continued down the paths they started in 2012.

The Lady Wolfpack, three-time consecutive Class AAAAA region champs and state semifinalists, entered Tuesday with a perfect 5-0 record. They lost a total of four matches in that span. Playing an eight-game pro set, Greenbrier’s five seniors and two freshmen lost just four games in besting Aquinas (4-4) 5-0.
