Some members of the Lakeside High football team saw live action Tuesday for the first time since the end of the 2011 season.

The Panthers matched up with Lincoln County for two hours at Lakeside in an unscored 7-on-7 passing league scrimmage.

Getting work against the Red Devils helped the Panthers prepare for this weekend’s Palmetto State Showdown at Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C.

Matthew McClure has brains and brawn, and now he also has the accolades to prove it.

While working to finish his management information systems and marketing degree, the University of Georgia hockey player was named an American Collegiate Hockey Association Academic All-American, according to the Ice Dogs Web site.

Junior and seniors with an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher were eligible for the honor. McClure, an Augusta Christian grad, has a 3.3 GPA.

Receiving accolades for his schoolwork resonated with McClure.

Gordon Park Speedway in Grovetown has been quiet since May 16 when the state fire marshal ordered it closed.

It’s expected to reopen when problems noted by the fire marshal have been fixed and successfully re-inspected.

“We’re doing some improvements, doing what the state wants us to do,” said speedway general manager Brian Stewart, who opened the park on Feb. 25. “We’re hoping to open in the next few weeks.”

Stewart said he expects the track will have lost $30,000 in revenue from missed Saturday dates and repairs if they open in mid-June.

Erin Sherrill ran track in high school for just one year, and that was more than enough.

On Tuesday, the Evans High School graduate signed her letter of intent to run track for Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga.

“Signing with Emmanuel College, a private school, speaks to her athletics and academics,” said Evans head track coach Eric Watson. “We haven’t seen the best of her, but what she showed got her a track scholarship.”

For the Knights, Sherrill ran the 100-meter, the 200 and was the anchor on the 4x100 relay team.
