Payne commits to run for her country   04/22/12 - 12:02am

With a stroke of the pen, Lakeside High School’s Erin Payne committed not only to run cross country and track for a college, but for her country.

In front of her family, friends and teammates, Payne signed to the U.S. Naval Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Payne said it was a long process, but once she visited Annapolis after her junior year, she knew it was the place for her.

“I went to the summer seminar and fell in love with the atmosphere,” she said. “It felt like instant family.”

National Athletic Training Month celebrated with clinic   03/28/12 - 12:08am

Honoring National Athletic Training Month, the sports medicine department from Doctors Hospital shared their skills with high school students at Grovetown High School on Saturday.

“It’s an opportunity for us to celebrate our profession and also educate upcoming potential college students to see if they want to go into that field,” said John Ellis, sports medicine coordinator at Doctors Hospital.

Pro softball player makes lasting impression   03/21/12 - 12:06am

Softball players who attended The Jessica Mendoza Experience at Greenbrier High School on Saturday got to see what makes the heart of a champion.

Mendoza, who won gold and silver medals with the U.S. Olympic softball team and is now a professional softball player, spent five hours with 40 Greenbrier High and local softball players in what was part clinic and part motivational session.

Cameron Busby: Grovetown High School   03/21/12 - 12:05am

For Grovetown High shortstop Cameron Busby, baseball is it.

The 16-year-old sophomore has been playing since he was 5 years old and has started at shortstop since coming to the school.

“I never played any other sport,” said Busby. “I love baseball. I love coming out here every day, working hard.”

Augusta Prep students organize 5K race for a cause   02/19/12 - 1:10am

Augusta Prep students are coming together to run for a cause with the Running for Justice/Natalee Holloway 5K at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The race, to be run on Augusta Prep’s cross country trail, is the brainchild of cross country runners Maggie McCloud and junior Amanda Murphy.

“Over the summer, Amanda and I thought we should do a race and raise money, and it hit me one day,” said McCloud, who is a senior at Augusta Prep. “We talked to Coach (Tom) Holodak ... and he was all for it.”.
