A breakthrough occurred for States Fort at a South Carolina golf tournament last month.

The 14-year-old Evans resident won first place in his age group at the Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy Junior Shootout on June 24 in Myrtle Beach. Fort fired a two-day, 1-under 143 and shot the lowest tournament score across the board.

In six Hurricane Junior Golf Tour events leading up to the Junior Shootout, he also recorded three second-place finishes and a tie for third.

Playing in the championship games of the boys state soccer tournament and state baseball playoffs helped lead Greenbrier High School to one more win.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Wolfpack’s athletic program was the region winner of the Georgia Athletic Directors Association’s Region Directors Cup.

Lakeside was second in the region, finishing with 775.5 points to Greenbrier’s 804.5.

Greenbrier finished fifth in the state behind Marist, Johns Creek, Pope and Lambert.

The state track finals were held over the weekend. The South Carolina Independent School Association finished its boys and girls season, while the Georgia High School Association held its girls meet.

Augusta Christian competed in the SCISA meet, held at Porter Gaud High School in Charleston, S.C., with the boys finishing fourth overall in Class AAA.

Sometimes the hardest goal to score is the first.

That was the case last week when the Greenbrier boys soccer team played host to the Hardaway Hawks in the first round of the Class AAAA state tournament.

The top-seeded Wolfpack had a number of chances to score in the first half, but it took a Luke Waechter penalty kick with less than five minutes left in the half to get on the board. The Wolfpack scored three more times in the second half and rolled to the 4-0 win.

“You’re always looking for the first one,” Wolfpack head coach Chip Warren said.
