Young teams compete at dual wrestling meet Tuesday   12/12/12 - 12:43am

Burke County was the big winner when a trio of young squads squared off in Tuesday night's dual wrestling match at Grovetown High School.
The Bears (18-4), with just one of five wrestlers that advanced to the state tournament in 2011 available, were still able to get by Lakeside 46-30 before beating the host Warriors 52-24.
In the final match of the night, Lakeside, with just two seniors on the team, was able to earn a split with a 46-36 win over Grovetown, who entered the night shorthanded with injuries.

Grapplers start season Friday night   11/16/12 - 11:49am

 

The wrestling season gets underway in full force this weekend.

Westside High School will play host to Grovetown and Greenbrier, along with ARC, Friday night beginning at 6 p.m.

Saturday, the Westside Rumble dual tournament will feature Grovetown, Greenbrier and Evans among others, with a start time of 9 a.m.

Monday night, the Augusta Christian season begins as the Lions take on Orangeburg Prep at 6 p.m.

Lions fight off Indians in win   11/10/12 - 2:18am

 

It didn’t come easy, but the Augusta Christian Lions are headed back to the South Carolina Independent School Class AAA state championship football game.

Against the Orangeburg Prep Indians Friday night, the Lions (12-0) overcame a sluggish first half offensively before taking control in the second half, going on to the 39-26 win.

They will face six-time consecutive SCISA champion Hammond Saturday at Benedict College’s Charlie W. Johnson Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The Lions last played in the SCISA championship game in 2007, losing to Hammond 17-14.

Lady Wolfpack lose in stunning fashion   05/12/12 - 10:14pm

 

When the final horn sounded at the end of the GHSA Class AAAA girls soccer quarterfinal Saturday night, the Lady Wolfpack found themslves in an unusal position.

The Lady Wolfpack entered unbeaten in 20 contests with a 19-0-1 record. They couldn’t stem the Marist Lady War Eagles’ offensive onslaught, however, and saw their season come to a close with a 7-1 defeat.

Both teams entered as No. 1 seeds, Marist (18-1-2) from Region 6, and looked to be evenly matched. A Lady Wolfpack win would have brought the state semifinal to Wolf Den Stadium next week.

Wolfpack win comes right on time   06/04/12 - 2:15pm

 

Greenbrier High School’s sweep of South Forsyth in the second round of the AAAA baseball playoffs Thursday, preventing a deciding game Friday, was important for several reasons.

First, the Wolfpack advanced to the playoffs’ third round with 4-1, 5-2 wins, giving Chris Wilkins the time Friday to take care of what had been on his mind all day.

Bulldogs sweep Spartans in different ways   03/25/12 - 1:30am

 

Both Harlem High soccer teams won against Glenn Hills on Tuesday night.

The girls team controlled play from start to finish in a 11-1 mercy rule-shortened affair, while the boys eked out a 2-1 victory.

It was the largest margin of victory for the Lady Bulldogs (8-0, 7-0 Region 3-AAA), who have outscored their opponents 53-4 this season.

The game was out of hand early, but it allowed head coach George Berry to experiment.

“We were able to work on set plays, drops and defense,” Berry said.

Big inning leads to Warriors loss   03/21/12 - 11:28pm

Lincoln County took advantage of its chances Wednesday night while Grovetown didn't, and it cost the Warriors baseball team a chance to win.
The Warriors stranded four men in the first three innings and the Red Devils (6-4) used an eight-run sixth inning en route to the 10-2 win.
There was plenty for Warriors head coach Mike Jones to be unhappy about in the pivotal sixth inning, which began with the teams tied at 1.
