Harlem takes out East Laurens in region tournament's first round   09/26/12 - 9:58pm

While it was Harlem third baseman Lindsey Stokes' birthday Wednesday, she was the one handing out the presents.
In the Lady Bulldogs' first game against East Laurens in the first round of the Region 3-AA Tournament, Stokes strode to the plate twice in the first inning. She hit a three-run homer in her first at-bat then topped that with a grand slam the next time up as the Lady Bulldogs scored 14 runs, going on to the 22-0 win in three innings.
"I haven't had a game like that," said Stokes.

Bulldogs make homecoming a happy one   09/24/12 - 11:47am

Harlem made its homecoming game a happy one Friday night.
The Bulldogs put together a dominating and historic performance against Social Circle, beating the Redskins 35-0.
The win ended a 13-game losing streak with their last win coming in the final week of the 2010 season.
While the offense pounded the Redskins (0-3) on the ground, gaining 379 yards, it was the defense that was special as they allowed just 19 yards of offense and did not allow a first down.

Lady Warriors take two Tuesday   09/19/12 - 9:06am

In a three-way battle between area volleyball teams, it was the Grovetown Warriors who came out on top Tuesday night.
In front of their home crowd, the Warriors beat the Westside Patriots and the Richmond Academy Musketeers while the Patriots bested the Musketeers.
At the end of August, Grovetown lost four in a row, but with the wins have now won four in a row, improving to 9-7.
"Hopefully this is the turnaround point for us," said Warriors head coach Amy Slagle.

Lady Wolfpack win two at cancer-awareness tournament   09/17/12 - 11:37am

While Greenbrier softball coaches and volunteers took care of things off the field at the two-day Mark Moseley Memorial Diamond Classic, the Lady Wolfpack took care of things on the field.
The Lady Wolfpack (17-5) beat Harris County 4-3 at Greenbrier Saturday morning then traveled down the road and defeated Salem, 9-5, at Patriots Park, the tournament's main site.
The 25-team cancer awareness tournament is named for Greenbrier's longtime assistant coach who died in 2010 after battling cancer.
Before Effingham County started tournament play Friday night, they had a gift to give.

Evans softball tops Lakeside 16-1 Tuesday night.   09/12/12 - 9:44am

The Evans Lady Knights softball team continued its hot streak Tuesday night as they took out the Lakeside Lady Panthers, 16-1.
The big blow for the Lady Knights came in the third inning when Alexis Schlein hammered a ball over the right-field fence for a grand slam and a 14-1 lead.
The win was the Lady Knights' (11-4-1, 2-0 Region 2-AAAAA) 10th in its last 11 games, and eighth in a row, as they finished off the Lady Panthers in a mercy-rule shortened three innings.
"We're just trying to keep doing little things right," said Lady Knights head coach Colette Cassedy.

Lady Knights perfect at own tournament   09/09/12 - 9:28pm

The Evans Lady Knights tried hard to get in its final game of its own softball tournament Saturday afternoon, and who could blame them?
The Lady Knights were 4-0 with one game to play in the Evans Invitational, a 12-team tournament at Patriots Park Friday and Saturday, without allowing a run. But after an hour rain delay and a failed restart, the tournament's final games were washed out.
"It's gone pretty well until the weather right now," said Evans head coach Colette Cassedy during the day's rain delay. "I'm good and pleased with the tournament."

Panthers run over by Bulldogs   09/08/12 - 1:20am

After scoring just seven points in its season-opener, the Lakeside Panthers hoped to get the offense untracked Friday night.
They accomplished a lot of what they wanted offensively, but the defense couldn't stop the rushing attack of the Thomson Bulldogs, falling 51-27.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 6 in Class AAA, ran the ball 48 times for 528 yards, with senior running back Chris Jordan finishing with 25 carries for 325 yards and three third-quarter touchdowns as the Bulldogs broke the game open.

Lady Cavaliers taken out by Lady Predators   09/05/12 - 10:49pm

Augusta Prep head coach Rich Bland wanted his volleyball team to play some good competiton in the early going to help get them ready for area play.
He got that and more when his Lady Cavaliers were taken down 3-0 by Fox Creek Wednesday night.
"Fox Creek is a good team, very similar to South Aiken in that they have a quick offense and they're coached well," said Bland.
The Lady Cavaliers (3-2) were coming off two area wins, but started slow in games and couln't contain the Lady Predators (3-0) at the end of them.

Lady Bulldogs sparkle at Diamond Days   09/01/12 - 9:07pm

Heading into the heart of region play Thursday, the Harlem Lady Bulldogs softball team appears to be peaking at the right time.
Saturday at its Harlem Diamond Days, Amber Garrett and Kristin Rawlins took the mound and pitched two gems.
Facing Washington-Wilkes, the freshman Garrett (6-4) went first. She allowed just two hits while striking out eight in a complete-game effort as the Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Tigers 8-0 in a mercy rule-shortened game.

Golden Hawks too talented for Warriors   09/01/12 - 12:01am

It wasn't the kind of home- and season-opener the Grovetown Warriors were looking for Friday night.
Hosting the Washington County Golden Hawks, the Warriors were outplayed in all phases of the game, losing 65-14.
In their only two previous meetings, Washington County had beaten Grovetown by an average of 42-14 and bettered that by halftime, leading 44-7.
