Grovetown trucker named driver of the year   06/19/13 - 12:01am

After 13 years and more than 1.6 million miles on the road, a Grovetown man was named truck driver of the year by a national trucking company.

National Carriers, Inc., which operates throughout the continental United States, honored James ‘‘Randy’’ Barnett as its driver of the year at a Dallas banquet March 8.
Barnett said in his 13 years with the company, he’s never turned down any load, and has driven across 48 states.

A beach-themed concert will celebrate the start of summer at Evans Towne Center Park.

The Summer Beach Blast will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 1, on the stage of the Lady Antebellum Pavilion, said Stacie Adkins, events manager for Columbia County.

The concert will feature a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, Son of a Sailor, and the party band Swingin’ Medallions, Adkins said.

Ribbon cutting celebrates Family Y   05/19/13 - 12:01am

County officials and community members Wednesday celebrated the opening of the area’s newest Family Y.

The Steiner Branch Family Y, in the Gateway Center off Horizon South Parkway near Interstate 20, opened May 11. County officials called the Grovetown facility a great asset for Columbia County.

Representatives of the Family Y of Greater Augusta agreed.

“We’re excited to be opening and to be able to serve the city of Grovetown,” said Millie Huff, community relations director for the Family Y of Greater Augusta.

UGA Day comes to Columbia County   05/05/13 - 12:01am

The Augusta chapter of the University of Georgia Alumni Association and the Greater Augusta Bulldog Club are partnering to host UGA Day in the Augusta area.

One of 12 UGA days spanning four states, this year’s Augusta UGA Day will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Savannah Rapids Pavilion.

The event will feature presentations from incoming UGA President Jere Morehead, football offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and head basketball coach Mark Fox after a buffet-style dinner.

A local church this weekend will celebrate a deep-rooted American tradition: Sacred Harp singing.

Using only melodies denoted by “shape notes,” Sacred Harp is a form of singing hymns a cappella. Old Line Primitive Baptist Church, at 3646 Old Petersburg Road in Martinez, will celebrate the singing style from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4.

The free event will give participants the opportunity to sing along or just sit and listen, and begins with a lesson in Sacred Harp singing for beginners.

Celebrating the power of a story, the Columbia County Library will hold a panel discussion and book-signing by three authors.

Authors Mary Kay Andrews, Beth Harbison and Patti Callahan Henry will visit as part of the library’s “Just Beachy” event at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 4.

The authors will talk about the writing process and take questions from the audience. A book signing with refreshments will follow.

Harlem dedicates clock and mayors tribute   04/24/13 - 12:10am

Harlem residents celebrated the new clock honoring the city’s past and present mayors Friday.

The city dedicated the new clock at a ceremony to celebrate the memorial’s completion.

Located just outside Harlem City Hall, the memorial includes a clock, a bench and a brick wall in which the names of former mayors and dates of their terms are inscribed.

“It’s designed to be a living memorial,” Harlem City Manager Jason Ritzner said. “We can come back and add more names.”

Rodeo celebrates nine years of helping burn victims   04/21/13 - 12:01am

After eight years of raising money for burn patients and their families, the Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation is preparing for its ninth annual Rodeo Nights.

The foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Rodeo Nights will be held Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, at the Columbia County Merchants Association Fairgrounds on Columbia Road. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

Largest cycling event in CSRA prepares for 10th year   04/17/13 - 12:11am

Cyclists are gearing up for the 10th Annual Best Dam Ride on Sunday.

Meeting at the J. Strom Thurmond Dam at Clark’s Hill Lake, the ride begins Sunday, April 21, at 8:30 a.m. with registration starting at 7 a.m. Registration is $35 per person in advance and $40 per person on the day of the event.

The ride begins at the dam and travels across three counties. Riders can choose between a 25, 60, 80 or 100-mile road ride or a 5-20, 36 or a 50-mile mountain bike ride on the Bartram Trail, said Phil Cohen, the owner of Chain Reaction Bicycles and coordinator of the race.

Car shows rev up Evans park   04/14/13 - 12:00am

Spring is shaping up as a season of car shows, with two upcoming events at Evans Towne Center Park.

The Evans Lions Club will hold its sixth annual Jim Metts Memorial Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20.

Admission to the event is free, with a $25 registration fee for show entries.

This will be the show’s first year at the Evans park, said Cathy Rhodes, a Lions Club member and co-chairwoman of the event with her husband, Mike.
