Homeowners associations aren't the bad guys   09/19/12 - 12:03am

How many times do we need to see this same plot before we figure out how the movie ends?

A homeowner in a neighborhood fails to live up to the civil agreement that governs the community, and then complains that the community’s governing body is picking on him or her. The community comes out looking like the bad guy just for trying to make sure everyone plays by the same rules.

Ricardo Azziz famously said Augusta isn’t “cool.”

It turns out that’s not necessarily a bad thing – especially for Columbia County.

Boring, see, is also stable. And decidedly un-whacko.

Want to see the opposite? Millions apparently do, flocking to cable TV to gawk at such reality show nonsense as Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo, a spinoff of the atrocious Toddlers in Tiaras, providing a warped view of rural life, child exploitation and spoiled brat behavior.

End stormwater fee? What a terrible idea   09/09/12 - 12:01am

During the recent primaries, the slogan “repeal the stormwater tax” on County Commissioner Charles Allen’s ads was puzzling.

After all, Allen hadn’t raised a peep about it during his first term in office. And as his opponent accurately pointed out, the stormwater utility fee is just that: a fee. Columbia County even has a court ruling affirming it.

Catchy yet meaningless campaign slogans are nothing new. But in this case, Allen’s timing in raising the issue is fortuitous.

Hiding Anderson isn't helping him   08/26/12 - 12:04am

Barring some miracle hidden in a recount of Tuesday’s primary runoff or in overseas military absentee ballots still counted through Friday, Lee Anderson is the Republican nominee for the 12th District congressional seat. He’ll now plow ahead to the November election against Democratic incumbent John Barrow.

Why would anyone fail to check their tax bill?   08/22/12 - 12:07am

You’d think some things go without saying.

Wear your seat belt. Don’t lock a kid in a hot car. Don’t run with scissors.

Yet unbelted people die in car crashes all the time. Last week, eight children around the country died in hot cars. We’re not aware of scissors-related accidents, but surely there must be some.

It would only seem reasonable to assume that some people either just don’t get the memo, or choose to ignore it at their (or someone else’s) peril.

Voters need to finish the drill Tuesday   08/19/12 - 12:07am

Traditionally, runoff elections attract little attention and even fewer voters.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Barely three weeks ago, Columbia County voters decided several races in the July 31 primary. But in two races, the job isn’t finished. With four candidates running for the Republican nomination for the District 12 Congressional seat, and three candidates seeking the Columbia County District 1 School Board seat, no one landed a simple majority of votes.

Thus, voters are being asked to finish the drill.

Nagle retires at tough time for public schools   08/12/12 - 12:01am

After what will have been 38 years as an educator, the final seven as superintendent of Columbia County schools, Charles Nagle will retire. He’s going to be hard to replace.

His departure comes at a difficult time for public schools, but the reality is that just about any time is tough. It’s only been harder for the past few years.

No reason for campaign nastiness   08/15/12 - 3:23pm

It appears the 12th District race for the Republican nomination has come down to Lee Anderson and Rick Allen. One of the two will survive a Aug. 21 runoff and go on to what is expected to be a very tough race in November against incumbent John Barrow.

The election is less than two weeks away, which means the candidates have a short time to persuade voters to head back to the polls. But just as being cooped up in a car for too long on a family vacation can make kids turn cranky, the compressed time until election day can bring out a lot of ugliness.

It shouldn’t be that way.

Like it or not, we've got TSPLOST   08/05/12 - 12:03am

There’s little comfort in knowing Columbia County voters agreed with our call to reject adding an extra 1 percent to the sales tax to pay for transportation projects. Most of the counties in the 13-county region voted otherwise, so come Jan. 1, everyone’s taxes on local purchases go up by 14 percent. Happy new year.

After three weeks of advance voting, the election Tuesday seems almost anti-climactic. But most people haven’t yet voted, and many haven’t decided between candidates. Here are our suggestions for contested races voters will find on Columbia County ballots.

We urge all voters to choose a Republican ballot. It’s the only way to vote on all available contested races.
