New recreation and events position a great fit for Augusta native   10/30/11 - 12:03am

Jennifer Evans was working on an interim basis with Augusta Parks and Recreation last month when she happened to flip open the newspaper.

There, she found an advertisement for a community events coordinator position with the city of Grovetown.

“‘I should go apply for this,’” Evans recalls thinking at the time. “‘This would be perfect.’”

As it turned out, Evans – an Augusta native and Academy of Richmond County graduate – was the ideal candidate.

County will debate adding BMX park to Blanchard Woods   10/30/11 - 12:03am

When Barry Smith was tasked with determining the popularity of BMX racing in Columbia County, he wasn’t sure what he’d discover.

When he found out that most Augusta BMX members live in the county and travel to downtown Augusta to race, he started to realize the level of interest.

“I was kind of surprised at the numbers,” the county’s director of Community and Leisure Services noted. “When they said that 80 to 85 percent of Augusta BMX riders live in Columbia County, that tells you something right there.”

Evans falls in second round of state softball playoffs   10/23/11 - 1:10am

Colette Cassedy has had strong hitters come and go during her time as head coach of the Evans High School softball program. But rarely has she coached a team that collectively hit as well as this year’s Knights.

“It’s probably been one of the better hitting teams I’ve ever coached,” Cassedy said. “I’m not saying I didn’t have other good hitters ever, but just all together, 1-9, this is probably one of my better-hitting teams.”

Greenbrier volleyball team shows character in playoff loss   10/23/11 - 1:09am

After losing a tight second game in a best-of-three match Tuesday evening against Johns Creek, Greenbrier High School’s volleyball team went down 7-1 in Game 3.

It was a situation that required plenty of character, and Wolfpack head coach Debbie Born knew this was the type of team that would show it.

The Wolfpack fought back, and even had a few game points of their own before falling 29-27 to the Gladiators.
