School officials unveiled a map of proposed elementary school zones to the Columbia County school board at its Tuesday meeting, and followed up Wednesday with a public hearing.

The rezoning process was prompted by the new Evans Elementary School, scheduled to open on Gibbs Road for the 2013-2014 school year.

The new 51-classroom school is projected to have a 640-pupil enrollment, according to a presentation by Robert Jarrell, the school system’s assistant superintendent for student support.

Three Columbia County men were arrested early Friday, charged with robbing a man in the laundry room of a Martinez apartment complex earlier in September.

Terry Odell Dumas Jr., 20 of Grovetown; Trey Victor Greaves, 18, of Grovetown; and Troy Colin Greaves, 23, of Evans, were charged with armed robbery and are being held at the Columbia County Detention Center without bond, said Columbia County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

For more than a decade, Don Cleary devoted himself to building the drama program at Paine College in Augusta.

He returned to his roots in choir directing, however, when he accepted the artistic director position at Columbia County Choral Society.

“I’m no longer teaching at Paine College, so I don’t really have an outlet for my musical and theatrical nature,” the Augusta resident said. “It just seemed like ... a way of going back to your roots.”
