Schools offer healthier lunches   10/17/12 - 12:09am

Columbia County students purchasing lunches at school this year might be unaware of changes made to the meal program.

It is more noticeable for Jane Wiggins, the school system’s nutrition services director.

Starting this school year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has changed the number of grain-rich foods required for pupils based on elementary, middle and high school age groups.

“We can’t serve a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day in the elementary school,” Wiggins said. “We only have sandwiches like three days a week now.”

A year into running her first business, Gabrielle Corbin believes she’s found a recipe for success.

Corbin operates Catch Phrase Cafe inside the Columbia County Library, a spot that has seen several other cafes come and go.

“I found that people really like the personal aspect of it,” she said. “They all know me because I’m here almost every single day.

“They all know me, and they know my staff.”

Corbin, who opened Catch Phrase in September 2011, is the first tenant in the library’s cafe space to renew her lease, she said.

UPDATE: Evans woman in good condition after Thursday night crash   10/12/12 - 6:31pm

A 21-year-old woman is listed in good condition at the Medical College of Georgia hospital Friday following a three-vehicle wreck on Columbia Road the night before.

Cory Lynn Ledford, of Evans, had to be extricated from a 2003 Honda Civic that collided with a Honda Accord at about 8 p.m. while turning left into the entrance of Ivy Falls, according to a Columbia County accident report.

She was taken to MCG with serious injuries, but her condition has improved to good, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Evans wreck sends two to the hospital   10/11/12 - 1:39pm

A United States Postal Service employee and another person were transported to the hospital Thursday following a two-vehicle wreck at Washington and Gibbs roads in Evans.

The crash occurred at about 11:50 a.m. as the driver of a USPS truck tried to turn left from Washington Road onto Gibbs Road, said Columbia County sheriff’s Deputy Mark Smith.

The USPS truck, driven by Richard Anthony Boone, 61, of Evans, collided with a Chevrolet Silverado traveling east on Washington Road, Smith said.

Annual Child Enrichment fundraiser offers sweet treats   10/10/12 - 12:02am

Dan Hillman considers the Savannah Rapids Pavilion the perfect venue for his organization’s fall fundraiser.

Child Enrichment Inc.’s Art of Chocolate takes place at the pavilion at 3300 Evans-to-Locks Road in Martinez, from 7-11 p.m. Friday.

The annual event, now in its 17th year, features desserts and exhibits from several local chefs, including La Bonbonniere, La Maison, Doubletree Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, Garlic Clove Italian Eatery, Augusta Technical College’s Culinary Arts program and Bruster’s Real Ice Cream.

Columbia County's Teacher of the Year reaches pupils both in and out of the classroom   10/10/12 - 12:01am

Katie Holmes might not appear on the cover of next week’s People magazine, but she’s a celebrity among her pupils and colleagues.

The Baker Place Elementary School teacher was given the red carpet treatment at an Oct. 4 banquet where she was selected Columbia County Teacher of the Year.

Now in her fifth year as an educator, Holmes was showered with prizes, including $500, multiple gift cards and a year-long lease on a new Mercedes-Benz C250.

She N She to perform at Eddie Money concert after winning Amateur Series   10/10/12 - 1:34am

 

Folk-rock band She N She took the title of Columbia County’s top talent act.

The acoustic group was selected Thursday as the winner of Columbia County’s Amateur Series.

As one of several prizes, She N She gets the chance to open for Eddie Money and Starship on Friday at the Lady Antebellum Pavilion. The concert begins at 5 p.m.

“When they said we were opening up for Eddie Money, we were just like ‘This is over the top,’ ” said She N She guitarist and singer Drea Suarez. “We were just thoroughly excited about opening up for Eddie Money.”

Proposed middle school zones shown to Columbia County School Board   10/09/12 - 8:27pm

New proposed school zones for four Columbia County middle schools were unveiled Tuesday at the county school board meeting.

School board members got the first glimpse of the proposed rezoning, which is prompted by the new Columbia Middle School opening on William Few Parkway next school year.

Under the proposed plan, Evans and Grovetown Middle schools would see the biggest changes to its pupil populations.

Columbia County annouces Teacher of the Year   10/07/12 - 12:04am

Baker Place Elementary School’s Katie Holmes was named the Columbia County School system’s Teacher of the Year Thursday night during a banquet at West Lake Country Club.

Holmes, an educator for five years, gave much credit to those surrounding her in the school system.

“I work with so many great educators,” the first-grade teacher said.

Holmes is the first Teacher of the Year from Baker Place Elementary in the school’s first year of eligibility in the county-wide program.

Appling food pantry holding peanut butter drive Saturday in Harlem   10/03/12 - 12:14pm

An Appling food pantry is in need of peanut butter.

Columbia County Cares has been experiencing a peanut butter shortage for two months, with both Golden Harvest Food Bank and local food drives unable to meet the demand, said food pantry director Dave Iverson.

“I don’t know why,” he said. “Nobody seems to have peanut butter, and so we have not been able to get it.”

To make up the deficit, the food pantry will accept peanut butter donations in front of the IGA store in Harlem on Saturday during the annual Oliver Hardy Festival.
