People can help fund a cure for breast cancer Monday simply by getting a haircut at an Evans salon.

Retreat Spa & Salon, 4246 Washington Road, will hold the fifth annual Cut for a Cure from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The event doubles as a fifth anniversary for Retreat Spa & Salon.

“It’s just giving back to the community,” said salon customer service manager Ashlee Sullivan. “And there’s so many people affected by breast cancer.”

A new park in the heart of Evans opens Saturday with music, games and family activities.

Evans Town Center Park officially opens at 2 p.m., followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. and music starting at about 4 p.m.

The event will feature music from country and rock artists Rick Monroe, Gary Ray, SwampDaWamp and Kara Clark through 9 p.m.
Activities include pony rides, a petting zoo, a rock-climbing wall, a mechanical bull, an inflatable play area and face painting. Food vendors will also be on site.

Mary Combs remembers every detail of her high school class ring.

The 1985 Waynesboro High School ring was adorned with an orange topaz birthstone, revealing the name Mary on one side and the image of a cross on the other.

Her full maiden name, Hazel Mary Smith, was etched on the band's interior.

The ring, though, had gone missing from the Matthews, Ga., resident 16 years ago.

After speaking with a man over the phone who claimed to have a ring matching her description, it didn't take long for Combs to put two and two together.

Starting Saturday, groups of people will go door to door in Columbia County neighborhoods collecting edible items, but they aren't seeking Halloween candy.

Residents wishing to participate in the 17th annual It's Spooky to be Hungry food drive will need to have nonperishable food donations ready between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.

A small number of subdivisions will participate on Oct. 29, said It's Spooky to be Hungry Coordinator Millie Robinson.
