A Martinez-based organization aimed at assisting seniors in the community recently was awarded with help of its own.

Walmart announced Wednesday that When HELP Can’t Wait would receive $10,000 as part of its “12 Days of Giving” Facebook campaign.

Two dogs added to canine unit   12/14/11 - 1:00am

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has added two new four-legged members to its canine force.

Fly, a 3-year-old German shepherd, and Baros, a 2-year-old Belgian malinois, were acquired in August from Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Ind.

“These are replacement dogs,” said sheriff’s Capt. Johnny Whittle.

They replace Rex and Renzo, both retired for medical reasons earlier this year.

Young burn patients shop for presents at Evans Target   12/11/11 - 1:03am

Christmas came early for a group of children suffering from burn injuries.

About 40 young patients of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital arrived Tuesday evening in style at Target in Mullins Crossing. After three stretch SUV limos dropped them off in front of the Evans store, they were greeted by Santa Claus and camera flashes from family and friends.

The burn center, partnering with The Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation, held its seventh annual Shop with a Doc at the Evans store.

Brandon Wilde resident's legacy to live on through wildlife dedication   12/11/11 - 1:02am

Bob Long’s legacy at Brandon Wilde will live on through his love for the outdoors.

Long, a resident of the Evans retirement community who died Monday, was instrumental in Brandon Wilde receiving a plaque that named the 106-acre scenic property a certified wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.

“He was just vibrant,” said Brandon Wilde marketing coordinator Lynn Gilmore, “He was very passionate about life in general, but gardening, the outside and nature were definitely really big on there.”

Columbia County charities seek help for the holidays   12/11/11 - 1:10am

To help spread Christmas spirit to those less fortunate, Columbia County-based organizations are looking for help from the community.

When HELP Can’t Wait is looking for church groups, businesses and individuals to make the season bright for elderly residents living at nursing homes in Columbia and Richmond counties.

For the past five years, the Martinez organization has recruited area churches and companies to “adopt” a nursing home in December.

Lawyer hired for Magnolia Trace issue   12/14/11 - 3:38pm

Columbia County officials have hired an attorney for help in finding a way to legally halt construction of a “low-income” development in Martinez.

Patrick O’Connor, with the Oliver Maner firm in Savannah, Ga., was hired Friday afternoon examine the planned construction of Magnolia Trace on Old Ferry Road, County Administrator Scott Johnson said in an email.

Singing Christmas tree returns to Martinez church   12/14/11 - 2:40pm

It’s time for choir members at Abilene Baptist Church to rock around the Christmas tree.

Four presentations of Abilene’s 33rd annual Singing Christmas Tree are scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday.

The seasonal performances typically bring 4,500 to 6,000 people to the church, which is across from the intersection of Washington and Columbia roads, said Abilene Music Minister Tommy Sunderland.

“We hear all the time from folks ... that the Singing Christmas Tree starts their season off,” Sunderland said.

Columbia County Choral Society presents Christmas concert   12/07/11 - 1:10am

The Columbia County Choral Society is set to celebrate the meaning of Christmas through song.

The choral society’s annual Christmas performance, A Service of Lessons and Carols, is planned for 7:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Evans, 515 N. Belair Road.

The concert is based on The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from The King’s College of our Lady and St. Nicholas in Cambridge, England, which is broadcast live each Christmas Eve, Choral Society Artistic Director Timothy Powell said.

Residents oppose new rental housing development in Martinez   12/04/11 - 1:21am

Residents say they will be looking for more information about a planned affordable housing development when they visit Tuesday’s Columbia County Commission meeting.

The Magnolia Trace subdivision, off Old Ferry Road, is slated for 50 single-family rental homes subsidized through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
