Planning and engineering department seeks fee changes   06/19/12 - 3:30pm

Those active in the Columbia County building community might soon see a change in fees charged by the county’s Planning and Engineering department.

County commissioners will hear the first reading Tuesday of a proposal to increase certain Planning and Engineering fees such as plats and rezonings. The revised fee chart also adds separate categories for services, such as minor waivers and secondary residential structures, that once fell under other sections.

After shedding more than 100 pounds last year, Bill Corder now works to inspire his 11-year-old daughter to live healthy.

The Evans father lost 111 pounds since joining an area Weight Watchers in January 2011, which led Corder’s daughter, Calla, to nominate him as The Columbia County News-Times’ Father of the Year.

“I just wanted to be healthier for my family,” Corder said. “I wanted to be around to see my kids graduate and get married.”

Choral director will bid farewell at concert   06/13/12 - 8:55am

When the Columbia County Choral Society performs a concert Friday to celebrate American music, it will also be saying farewell to its choral director.

After leading the choir for nearly two years, Dr. Timothy Powell is stepping down to spend more time with his family. Powell and his wife have a 4-month-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

“In this case, it’s just another night away from home,” Powell said of being the choir director. “The position with the choral society ... regretfully was something we needed to step back from.”

New York Times best-selling author Carl Hiaasen will be the featured guest at Columbia County’s fourth annual Books Alive celebration this weekend.

Hiaasen, a former Miami Herald reporter, has written books for adults and children. His young-adult and children’s books include Flush, Scat, Chomp and Hoot, which was turned into a movie.

His adult novel, Skinny Dip, was the inspiration behind the 1996 film Striptease, which features Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds.

Though Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal was unable to attend a breakfast meeting in Martinez on Tuesday to discuss the 1-percent sales tax referendum for transportation, the issue still dominated conversation.

Deal was scheduled to talk to the crowd gathered at West Lake Country Club during a breakfast sponsored by the Georgia Transportation Alliance, which is an entity of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce established to promote the sales tax. Due to cloudy weather, the helicopter set to bring Deal to the Augusta area was grounded.

Two college roommates threw caution to the wind 25 years ago for a cross-country road trip.

David Brock and Patrick Cumby set off May 31 to repeat the experience with a five-week trek from Evans to the California coast.

They’re making the voyage in the same 1960 Triumph TR3 roadster, which barely held together on the first trip. This time, the men are being followed by a four-person documentary crew hoping to capture each blunder along the way.

The Columbia County Planning Commission approved a rezoning Thursday to add acreage and another entrance to a church planned near Grovetown.

New Life Christian Center sought the rezoning of 11.6 acres at the intersection of Mill Branch and Lewiston roads from single-family residential to special district, bringing the total campus to nearly 31 acres.

In 1995, the church received approval for 13.3 acres, and an additional 6 acres were later added.

Families can escape the heat to catch a movie indoors each Wednesday in June and July at the Columbia County Library.

The fifth annual Family Movie Matinee series starts June 6 inside the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center at the Evans library.

“Even though it’s in a smaller venue, it’s one of the most popular air-conditioned events that we have throughout the summer,” said county Community Events Specialist Virginia Atkins.

Each movie is free, family-friendly and has a PG rating. The movies begin at 1 p.m.

8 teens cited for drinking at Evans party   06/01/12 - 10:24am

Columbia County authorities cited eight teens for underage drinking Tuesday at a house party in Evans.

Deputies arrived at a home on the 300 block of Barnsley Drive at about 12:30 a.m. in reference to a loud party and saw several people standing outside, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office incident report.

They were all underage and had been drinking alcohol.

The homeowner walked outside and asked for assistance in getting the other underage drinkers out of his home.

Three arrested for West Lake armed robbery   05/31/12 - 1:37pm

 

Three Evans residents were recently arrested in connection with an armed robbery in which illegal drugs and cash were taken from a home in the West Lake subdivision.

Columbia County authorities charged Joshua Lynn Westover, 23, of the 800 block of Bridgewater Lane, Woodrow Merril Meadows III, 18, of the 900 block of Deercrest Circle, and Andrew Lee Vowell, 16, of the 1400 block of Aylesbury Drive, with burglary, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during commission of a crime.
