A Harlem teen accused of fatally shooting his 13-year-old friend was given the maximum sentence Friday at a Columbia County Juvenile Court hearing.

Zachary Provance, 14, was sentenced by Juvenile Court Judge Douglas Flanagan to the maximum amount of confinement allowed, which has yet to be determined.

“When somebody dies, someone goes to jail,” Flanagan said.

Provance admitted to accidentally shooting Grace Eleanor “Elle” Kelly, 13, when they and two other teens were in Provance’s Kenner Street home on March 29 preparing for a Harlem Middle School dance.

Columbia County plan­ning commissioners on Thursday approved bringing a full-service car dealership to a busy street corner in Evans.

A request to rezone 4.5 acres at Washington and Gibbs roads from neighborhood commercial to general commercial was approved 4-0 by the commission. Board member Darryl James was absent.

Land owners proposed putting a showroom, sales facility and a service center on the property, which backs up to two neighborhoods.

A staple in the Columbia County community for many years, Strictly Country Inc. is closing this weekend.

“It’s going to be so hard for me to shut that door,” said owner Rachel Robertson.

The gift shop, located on the corner of Washington and North Belair Roads in Evans, will close Saturday, she said. Robertson said she wasn’t yet ready to discuss the closure in full detail.

“It’s just got me tore up right now,” said Robertson, who is the widow of former Columbia County commissioner Vince Robertson.
