Lakeside, Greenbrier to hold fundraiser 5ks   01/29/13 - 2:37pm

Two Columbia County high schools are set to hold fundraiser footraces for the next two weekends.

The fifth annual Lakeside High School Panther 5K, sponsored by the school’s cross country team, will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at the school.

The race is a fundraiser for a scholarship in memory of Lisa Meitin, the wife of cross country coach Jerry Meitin, said Carrie Brooks, a Lakeside High School teacher and an assistant cross country coach.

Elections board to review director applications   01/29/13 - 1:18pm

Columbia County’s Board of Elections will meet Wednesday to begin the process of selecting a successor to retired Director Deborah Marshall.

The board received 45 applications for the position by the Friday, Jan. 25 deadline, said Board Chairman Larry Long.

“I’ll be presenting them to the board tomorrow,” he said, adding that he hasn’t reviewed them all but that he expects many of the applications to be winnowed out as unqualified.

Delegations to hold session in Atlanta   01/25/13 - 5:33pm

The Columbia and Richmond County legislative delegations will hold a joint meeting Tuesday, Jan. 29 in Atlanta.

Speakers for the session will include Georgia Regents University President Dr. Ricardo Azziz and Georgia Department of Transporation officials, according to a news release from the state Rep. Ben Harbin, R-Evans, and state Rep. Wayne Howard, D-Augusta.

The session will be held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in room 515 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building next door to the state Capitol.

UPDATE: Marine training could unnerve area residents   01/24/13 - 2:24pm

 


Columbia County won’t be under attack for the next few days, but at times it might sound like it.


Students from the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command’s Marine Special Operations School, from Camp Lejeune, N.C., are scheduled to conduct a 20-day training exercise across a five-county area that includes Columbia County and portions of South Carolina through Feb. 12, according to an email announcement from the Marine Corps.

Fort Gordon center offers help with tax prep   01/23/13 - 5:47pm

The Tax Center at Fort Gordon, which assists service members with preparing tax returns, will open at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the Courtyard on Brainard Ave.

Last year the Tax Center processed more than 2,400 returns for service members, family members and retirees, resulting in over $4.9 million in refunds and an estimated savings of $480,000 in tax preparation fees, according to a news release from Fort Gordon Public Affairs.

Students invited to enter wildlife poster contest   01/30/13 - 1:17am

Teachers and students can celebrate Georgia’s wildlife by participating in the annual Give Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest.

Students can share their plant and animal discoveries through art in the 23rd annual conservation poster contest, sponsored by the state Department of Natural Resources.

This year’s theme, “Everyone Can Be a Citizen Scientist,” encourages students to explore, observe and record data about the natural world.

Display explores history of political cartoons

Thomson exhibit explores history of political cartoons   01/15/13 - 6:22pm

 


An exhibit examining the history of American political cartoons is on display through April at the historic Thomson, Ga., birthplace of one of the state’s more famous politicians.


“Sketching Politics” is now open at Hickory Hill, and examines “the history and power of the political cartoon,” according to a news release from Hickory Hill curator Michelle Zupan.

Man charged after throwing drink at moving vehicle

Thrown drink sends man to jail   01/11/13 - 11:00am

 


A Martinez man was arrested Tuesday after hitting a vehicle with a “Thirstbuster” drink and then getting chased down by the other car’s occupants.


Tyler William Davitte, 24, Cutter Mill Road, was charged with reckless conduct and booked into the Columbia County Law Enforcement Center. He later was released after posting $1,600 bond, according to jail personnel.

Evans SADD chapter wins state grant   01/06/13 - 1:00am

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has awarded a $2,400 highway safety grant to Evans High School to enhance its chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions.

The grant, according to a news release, is “part of an ongoing program to involve students in efforts to reduce injury and death to young drivers.” The release also said student organizations such as SADD can help reduce the problem of teen highway fatalities.

Change is a constant fact of life   12/30/12 - 2:49am

 

Though 2012 was marked by controversial construction projects, scattered big-box closures and a spate of traffic fatalities, Columbia County also celebrated a year of positive changes.

They included establishment of a business opportunity zone, a new library district with Columbia County at the core and the rise of Evans Towne Center Park.
